    Neo’s anxieties

Shamas is taking Clomicalm. His issues are sound sensitivity, anxiety, fear-based aggression.....and a general fear of leaving the house. It took me months when I first got him as a rescue before he'd go for a walk past our block, and he still won't venture to roads bigger than 4lanes 5years...

    What made you smile today?

I wouldn't risk it if they were collared, but the headcollar makes Angel manageable....it's the only thing that does. Without it, I have to have my full attention on her and be in training mode. With her 75-80lbs, and Shamas' 87, I'm outweighed at this point...so they MUST be well behaved for...

    What made you smile today?

Got through a random dog encounter WITHOUT reaction from either dog tonight(well, a little whine from Angel) We were heading back from Tim Horton's, and I had both dogs on one hand...which is a trick and a half, as I have to arrange it JUST SO to be able to make quick adjustments on either...

    Angel. Born June 30th.

1/2 hour in the crate this morning. Put her in for breakfast, and forgot she was there while I got ready for work. I'll try for 1/2 hour - 45min tomorrow Must dig out the other crate too....I've been saying "Go crate" and then praising....and now I have the two dogs running in and out of the...

    Angel. Born June 30th.

Angel spent her first night alone without a fuss! I've been working on her being alone, but it's hard to teach a dog to be alone in a house where people come and go all the time. Especially with Shamas, who can't go more than 3-4 hours without an accident....We've had to come home to let him...

Shamas the rescue....journey of a pound dog

5 years in, Shamas has work with a couple of behaviorists, but we struggle to keep him focused in the face of distractions--he's just too concerned with the world around him, and potential threats. I've called a new behavioralist, who works more with physical reinforcement, and vocal(praise, and...

    Medicating anxious dogs

Shamas has developed a sore on his nose from the muzzle. I thought perhaps it was from wearing it for so long yesterday, as he was having a good day as far as his issues go...so on the way home from the vets, I let him have his head. I let him lead me around for a good hour and a half before...

    Hyperextending wrist

SO I ordered front carpal wraps. Just neoprene ones. Still looking at rear ones. I don't want something bulky-just a little support on that wobbly back left knee. Yesterday, after the vet, I let him lead me for as long as he liked, then called him a cab home. Good thing he had his big harness...

    Hyperextending wrist

No weight loss. He weighed in a couple pounds heavier...but this may literally be a case of the gear he wears. He leaves the house with a HEAVY tactical harness, thick collar, leather leash, and muzzle. plus carabiners to hold all the gear connected, for safety. The harness has always helped...

    Hyperextending wrist

So he's got Loose Ligaments, in all of his legs. Definitely tweaked the front one, but not so much that he's favoring it, just enough that when the vet manipulated it, he said "No thank you, I'll pass on that" Treatment plan: neoprene wraps on walks, and weight loss. we're not sure if...

    Hyperextending wrist

well, he looks trimmer. I won't know until the vet weighs him. I think this is more of an age/arthritis thing? He jumped both up and down from the bed this morning. I'd think if it hurt, he'd avoid doing that....but on the other side, he's a touch grouchy. I'm sure the vet can tell us. And if...

    Hyperextending wrist

Yeah, he's showing his age this year Hubby and I talked it over, and we agree we want Xrays. There seem to be three levels of support/splints available, and Xrays will tell us how much support he needs. Plus, depending on the condition of the ankle, it seems vets can actually cast splints for...

    Hyperextending wrist

I got home from work today and noticed Shamas' wrist is extending too far. No one noticed him limping...and he doesn't SEEM to be...but his left front leg, I've never seen him bend that wrist so far. It should go about 45 degrees? This is going closer to 30degrees when he puts weight on it...

    Angel. Born June 30th.

Daughter left at 4:30 am this morning. Angel didn't make a peep til someone got up to use the bathroom at 6:50. This makes me think it's not seperation she's got a problem with, but being left out. She hollered and fussed when her mistress first went on nights and we tried to make her sleep...

    Angel. Born June 30th.

So a quick check no status of crate training...Angel ate her dinner quite happily in the crate with the door closed. It took about 3 minutes to eat the food, and i opened the door for her as I saw her straighten up to lick her lips. I think that makes her 1/2-3/4 crate trained, with the...

https://www.labradortraininghq.com/labrador-training/how-to-crate-train-a-puppy/ Reference for crate training steps. There's a possible apartment opening, but the owner's concerned about the dog factor, and potential for damages to his place. He'd feel better if she were crated when left alone...

    Angel. Born June 30th.

Had a friend over today. Angel DID bark a lot at first, but I requested a "sit" as I stood in the front hall with her(my friend) and offered peanut butter cookie pieces for the action. Each time she wound up to woof, I got her attention on the cookie. She started instead to look at Shamas for an...

    Angel. Born June 30th.

Had a repairman over yesterday...and realised that we failed to socialise Angel to people coming into the house. She went ballistic, barking, with the full line standing up on her back. Her body language tells me that this could easily tip either way....she wants to be friendly, because we've...

    Medicating anxious dogs

Shamas is still barking quite a lot. It's very frustrating. I'm using "quiet" before barks the way the trainer said. But I'm also using a handheld device that I can beep at the time of him barking, to get him back to me. The thing we've always found is that once he started, he couldn't hear us...
