    Recall in exciting situations

Thanks. That sounds like a fun game. He’s not that great at retrieving. He will drop the ball on the way back distracted by scent and smells. I wonder if switching to gun dog training may help him a bit so he can get to run a bit more than he does with scent work.

    Recall in exciting situations

I’m definitely going to get some tight toys for him. And yes, I think he’s going to need more lead time. Will also book in some training sessions.

    Recall in exciting situations

Thank you, it’s hard when your adolescent dog looks like as adult to other people but still has puppy brain. I have found a trainer local to us so she knows the types of distractions there are and how most dogs are off lead on the common and towpath. I’ll keep you posted on our progress. I’ve...

    Recall in exciting situations

A bit of a long post. Stanley is going well but recently in the warmer weather we’ve had two incidents with public in open spaces. Stanley's recall has been generally quite good on his normal walks and we practice coming away from other dogs or coming back if he’s stopped to sniff and I’ve...

    Pulling on the lead

He’s 15 months. He’s such a friendly creature and wants to get involved in everything. He is also a big scent trailer which is great for Mantrailing but not so great when on a normal lead walk.

My Labrador Friends Book Club - Fiction Choice

I’m reading Jilly Cooper’s The Common Years which is her diary she wrote when living in Putney and walking her dogs on the common which is exactly where I walked Homer and now Stanley. She wrote it 50 years ago yet so much is still so much the same including all the different types of characters...

    Pulling on the lead

I feel I have let myself and Stanley down. I promised self when we got Stanley that he would not pull on the lead and I’ll train him to walk to heal and on a loose lead and not have my shoulder pulled out but I have failed both him and me. Feeling a bit bad that I have an unruly dog despite all...

    Doggy brags

I think it might be the latches on the crate as I’m sure Homer escaped from it a few times but not as quickly as Stanley.

    Doggy brags

Stanley has learnt a new trick!!!! He can open his crate in less time than it takes me to get from shutting him in to getting out the front door. Literally 10 seconds. three times in a row so it was definitely shut properly. We are going to have to get some caribinar clips to keep the ctate...

    Snowie

Sorry for only catching up now. So sorry to hear Snowie is so uncomfortable. I hope the higher dose of prednisone begins to help him. It’s devastating seeing them suffer.

    Doggy brags

My super sweet Stanley! While have a tea and cherry cake break during Mantrailing Pip (a lab x owned by our trainer) and Stanley were playing with Pips ball when another unknown dog came to interfere and Pip had a bit of a ‘set too’ with the other dog, Stanley took one look, decided Pip was...

    Confused about Crate Size

We used a small puppy size crate for Stanley but he out grew it quite quickly and then a big 42inch crate. I didn’t make the transition go well with Stanley and he struggled to settle in the bigger crate at night. The big crate is the one we used for our old dog Homer who was quite big and long...

Biting flank and base of tail

I’m not sure what to suggest about biting the case of her tail. I am concerned that you mention she throws up her kibble from time to time. Have you tried soaking it a few minutes in warm water to soften it and smaller meals more often. She may need quiet rest after eating, food can take quite a...
