Advice needed

Today, Red was behind me on our walk and when I turned round, I couldn’t see her. Thought, this is the right time to use the whistle so I did. She did immediately appear and started running towards me but then stopped to sniff!!! I wasn’t pleased and walked back to her and put her on her lead. She’s has always been good at recalling but just lately she has been a bit slower when I call her. Bit more ‘selective hearing’. She gets distracted by scents/smells. Any tips for getting her back on track?

Maybe start in the garden practising recall with some sniffy distractions, slowly building back up rewarding well for ignoring. I had this with both mine, so I throw treats on the ground for a 'find it' game. Or not sure if 'ping pong' recall with smelly treats would help. I'm sure someone will have better suggestions, these are just my thoughts Alison. xx

Yes I have been very lax with training this winter. I’m sure I can get this back on track using the advice above.
I think it's easy to get a bit complacent, but given the winter weather we've had we should probably go easy on ourselves, just walking has been challenging at times !

I do absolutely love doing ping pong recall with Cass though, she finds it such fun and always looks like she doesn't want to stop!

I use the ball to top up my recall for the twins, but it’s just a reinforcer for their normal recall cues, I don’t give a different “ball” cue. Not to say you shouldn’t, just that I’m working on their recall cues so that’s what I want to sharpen up.

For food, a super high reinforcer is the salmon coins by JR Pet Products. I break them into small pieces. All the dogs go nuts for them.

Yes I understand.

I’ve just ordered some salmon coins.

Yes going to start this again. Again something that’s fallen by the wayside

I think you have ‘hit the nail on the head’. The walking has been a challenge and quite a big one at times. Hopefully now the mud is drying out, I can focus more on Red and not just trying to keep upright 😊

Thank you @Natalie and @Charlie for treat suggestions

When we started puppy school with Joy, one of the first things the trainer looked at was how often our dog 'checked in' with us, and how we rewarded that. He then asked us to be super aware of our dogs checking in when out on walks and for the next three weeks to reward this massively every single time. He also advised that if ever our dogs appeared to be getting a bit lax in things that we had trained, we should go back to basics and start rewarding every check in again. I have found this really useful advice every time Joy appears to not be quite as focused on me as I would like. It has also made me realise that this only really happens when I probably haven't been as focused on her as she'd like (as you say, just remaining upright can take a lot of concentration at this time of year) so we go back to checking in, games, rewards, general fun and all of a sudden I've got my GoodGirl back!
I'm sure Red is really a GoodGirl too!:dug:

I have struggled with the treat that really get Hunter's attention. The big treat for velcro boy is left over duck (yes he has bloody expensive taste) or a very norty one.....Gouda cheese! The cheese is a Saturday morning thing, as the number of dog walkers seems to increase by 300%.
Don't worry @Atemas, you will soon both be back on track. It is so very easy to get complacent, especially in winter and these trying times.
I have also had to "up" my recall game with Hunter in the last few weeks. His recall in the woods yesterday was actually amazing. Both whistle and voice. Not one piece of Gouda cheese in sight, but teeny pieces of freeze dried salmon!
