Best Waterproofs

I am looking for some advice or recommendations on waterproofs please. Having just got back from a walk soaked to the skin in my waterproof jacket and trousers it's time to invest in some good ones. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you xx :)

My Paramo coat has died after 20 years sterling service, they are amazing - soft and totally waterproof. I remember walking all day in pouring rain in it, along Hadrian’s wall many years ago. I will buy another when I can afford it, but they are £300

OH and I do a lot of walking and have several waterproofs.

For light showers and warm weather Goretex Packlite jackets are wonderful. They're lightweight, easy to pack, dry quickly, breathable and shed water well.

For heavy drizzle and continuous light rain any mid-price breathable jacket will do. I found a Lowe Triple Point jacket in a sale. Rather than use the hood (which isn't really deep enough) I have a Tilley hat with a brim - it stops the water running down my neck.

For those really torrential days I have a Berghaus 'Cornice' jacket. Its longer than most waterproofs, breathable, and has a really deep hood. A decent breathable waterproof trouser keeps most of the water out.

Any breathable jacket needs to be proofed regularly otherwise it stops breathing. The rain soaks the outside of the jacket and condensation builds up inside. Once a year we put them in the washing machine with Nikwax jacket cleaner then re-proof them. Its really important to get all residual soap out of the washing machine before doing this so we run the machine on a short cycle without detergents before doing the jackets.

I bought my full length Target Dry wax coat about four years ago, its served me well . I re waterproofed it last year , seems to have coped well and doesn't let the wet through . For the price , its been a really good buy x

I think this may be the key to longevity.
It is only recently I have discovered that you can't just bung them in the machine with your usual cleaners

I have a Barbour jacket hanging in my cupboard. David bought it for me about 27 years ago, he got a size 10, I am an 8 so it was too big for me and as we hadn't been going out for very long I didn't want to say anything. It's still there  xx

I have a bright orange Jack Wolskin rain jacket. It’s a man’s one but when I saw it in the shop I just had to have it. It’s been a very good buy. Currently it’s hanging on a hook in the utility to dry off as I have just given both dogs a quick walk. I need to get my waterproof trousers out as lower half is so wet, I have he to get changed ☹.

I have three Barbours!
I didn’t buy any of them! One is beautiful for spring and autumn walking; it down and keeps you warm when you set off but you don’t overheat once you’ve been going a while.
The other two are waxed; one is quilted and fitted, the other is my everyday jacket in the winter; a looser fit so I can put more layers underneath as necessary, big pockets, weatherproof, warm... it’s just perfect for dog walks and I’d definitely recommend it. I would never pay that sort of money on a jacket for myself, though!

I came in soaked through about half an hour ago and really do need a properly waterproof lightweight jacket ( I've got a thick waterproof coat for the winter). On the other hand I'm not willing to pay a fortune - looking for a bargain!

The best coat I have ever had is my current Berghaus ‘Cornice’. Absolutely waterproof. I wear it all through the shooting season. We get some serious rain here on Exmoor in the winter but this coat keeps me dry. Not cheap but worth every penny. My overtrousers are cheap and cheerful Regatta from Mole Valley. Very comfy and waterproof.

It took a good few years but I finally found long lasting waterproof bottoms. Not expensive either. Admittedly not the most attractive but they last me two or three years at least and I get to wear them a lot feels like permanently in winter. I always found I'd end up with holes on the inside of the knee with waterproof bottoms and the nice walking ones with the seam across the knee look good but that seam always leaks.:hmm: Anyway as long as you don't mind you bottm half wearing farmers clothes Flexothane waterproofs are the best. Last time I watched the Yorkshire vet he was wearing a pair while helping a cow calve .:tmi::clap:

I like my Cornice too, especially its length.

Soap clogs the breathable membrane. The Nikwax cleaner will unblock the holes so it can breathe again. The proofing agent restores the finish so that water forms droplets and runs off instead of soaking in. Nikwax isn't cheap, but a bottle of each will do all of our waterproofs and lasts for several years.

Another vote for the Berghaus Cornice, I have the standard length, OH has the longer length - I'm onto my 3rd one - I seem to make my coats tatty & shabby, don't know how. I only wear the shell for spring/autumn. I have a very warm Deerhunter coat for winter. I have cheap & very effective Regatta over trousers (stood up well this morning, it was very wet!).

I’ve got  5 Barbours, all presents or inherited  - I reproof them every year or so, phenomenally sturdy in a really wild winter. Also a couple of Fjallraven anoraks bought in the sale - pretty good, this thread’s reminded me I need to nixwax them ;)
