Can dogs eat mussel shells?

Am in bits. Vet said to feed him tinned pumpkin, which I am now doing. He had a collapse yesterday before all this so I was in a state this morning before I found the rubbish all over the back yard and realised he had eaten and scrunched up all the mussel shells as there three sharp bits left.
So the vet actually saw him and sent you both home with instructions to feed him the pumpkin ? I’m hoping that means the vet thinks all will pass through without doing harm? Do they know why he collapsed yesterday? I’m so sorry he’s having such a hard time, what a worry for you.

I hope Rourke passes the shell without complication. I guess there’s not a lot the vet can do about it at this stage just wait for it to come out but I think if they’ve just told you to feed pumpkin they aren’t too concerned. 🤞 The things my dogs have eaten over the years that I’ve panicked about I have a good idea how you feel. Do they know why he collapsed?

No, vet doesn't know why he collapsed yesterday, she did say he has a healthy heart. She also said that sharp articles are better than a sock, though I tend to disagree as they must cut the intestine as they move through. The pumpkin is a long fibre which will wrap itself round the sharp objects, so fingers crossed. My stomach acid is going mad and I am in pain, my heart rate is pumping like mad and I reckon my BP is soaring!

Understandable how worried you are! I hope it all passes with no issues. Axel ate many things that had me in such worry, but he passed everything with no issues, the most similar would be broken up plastic that he swallowed in big pieces. I was also worried of him cutting up his insides but all was fine. We were advised to feed him a high fibre wet food for the exact same reason you were told to feed pumpkin. So I feel optimistic all will be ok  As unpleasant as this may sound… we were also told to dice up his poops to make sure it was coming out, because otherwise it could be wrapped up to well to see.

Very sorry to hear about Rourke collapsing also. Was he running around when this happened?

Im so sorry to hear that Rourke collapsed. And I’m so sorry you’re so worried. Snowie has eaten so many sharp bones. Once one got stuck on exit, but with some lube, the vet got it out with no ill effects. She scanned his stomach and intestines but there was no bleeding. The stomach and intestines are thick and muscular and lined with a thick layer of mucus. I’m sure he’ll be fine. On the bright side, at least he was feeling well enough after collapsing to want to scavenge! Thinking of you xxx

No, Rourke wasn't running around when he collapsed, we had only walked about 25 yards! I don't mind cutting up the poo :giggle: He did once eat is way through a whole young Muntjac, but their stomach acid deals with bones but not mussel shells! Thank you everyone for your positive posts, it does help x

The wait must be agony. I remember when Meg stole a chicken carcass and ate the whole lot. Nothing ever reappeared at the other end. We'll be thinking of you & Rourke today.
