Quinn just got out of surgery. Surgeon said that there was a pocket of fluid in the small intestine that ruptured, which can be cause by a number of things but his strongest feeling is that it was microscopic bacteria left behind from her first surgery. He had to remove 12cm more of small intestine that was very abnormal and thickened. He said that for the small intestine, this amount (+ the 10cm removed in Nov) is not concerning until you start removing 80-90% of the intestine. He is getting a biopsy done on the section he removed as it is so irregular. They leak tested her entire intestine and there does not seem to be any leakage, but there are two other sections with adhesions but they were so far apart that were not abnormal enough to resection. The main concern is if there is ongoing bacteria, so she will be in the ICU for several days with a drain to suck fluid from the site. The risk now is if there is more bacteria, she will have to undergo another surgery. He thinks because she went into the surgery fairly healthy and young that the risk is low and recovery should be smooth. The earliest she could come home is Saturday afternoon with the drain still in, but it's at the wait and see stage. Long term, leakage and abnormal intestines are the biggest concern.
