Christmas Films

My all time favourite since I was little is A Christmas Story and my other favourite is Four Christmases (love Vince Vaughan). I also like Christmas Vacation and I watch It's A Wonderful Life every year with my dad (it's his favourite), which we used to hate as kids but now I like it.

OMG I watched that a few years ago and was really excited about it because it had been hyped up so much, then I was like, WTF?! I think it would be like watching Airplane! for the first time now. Epic film, wrong era!
I watched Vacation in the RIGHT era and didn't get it. Same with Gremlins - hated that movie. Maybe I'm just a Grinch? :hmm:
It's not that I think it's the best Christmas film ever made, it's just our favourite and is now a thing for us.
However I completely emphasise with the premise, I've spent Christmases working so hard to make things perfect, trying to home cook everything and no one bloody notices at the end of the day. You think if you can only get xyz done, everyone will have a lovely jolly time but at the end of the day families fall out and bicker and bitch even if they don't mean to. So I completely get the nostalgia and the longing to bring people together like some sort of picturesque tableau in the film and recreate the idea of perfect past Christmases, but the reality is never the same 🤣

I`ve never watched Its a wonderful life , must try and see it as so many love it xx
Oh don’t bother, it’s awful 😂
I watched it for the first time a couple of years back, thinking I was going to experience something timeless and amazing, and hated it. The lead character is just terrible. The story is awful. It’s just eugh.

I think it’s one of those things that if you fell in love with it “back in the day”, it would work, but now... no. Avoid, avoid, avoid 😂

You get to like what you get to like! I mean, look at my pick: pretty sure I'm the only one here that not only doesn't hate Elf but watches it every year. I'm going to defend myself and say it's very American and a lot of it is back jokes aimed at people like me who grew up on Rudolf stop action Christmas specials from the 60's and SNL from the 80's. Or I just like it because I'm just weird, take your pick. 🤪

I'm with @snowbunny on It's a Wonderful Life, though maybe not for the same reasons. In my eyes, it's about a dude who tries to kill himself and lets other people mercilessly take advantage of him his whole life. I just find it sad, so not really my idea of Christmassy. Fun fact: the only reason it's even "a Christmas movie" is that the copyright ran out on it in the mid 1970's and from that point on all the local stations in the US used it as free filler for their Christmas holiday programming, playing it over and over each year (even multiple times per day). It's an accidental tradition. 😁

Or The Grinch 😬

I hated The Grinch (original animated version) the one time I saw it because he tortured the poor little dog. No surprise I never wanted to see the movie version. Actually I don't even know if the dog thing was true or just the impression I had as a little kid!

I usually watch "Death Becomes Her" at Christmas. Nothing to do with the holiday, I just enjoy watching nerd Bruce Willis triumph and it's my yearly reminder to appreciate the accumulating wrinkles and the fact that I've not completely fallen apart yet.

(spoiler alert: this is the last scene)

So do I! Everyone I know loves it - my sister-in-law watches it multiple times a year! Netflix has a mini doc about how it was made, which I watched last night! OH's sister (not the same SIL) named her old dog Jovi :)

Actually, my dad hates it....maybe it's a brit thing? He hates american/canadian comedies in general too...
