Cold water tail...

Poor boy, I hope he is feeling better today.
We've not had this yet, I thought it was only associated with water I didn't know it was too much wagging as well.

I’m feeling sad. Ariel woke up with this this morning with nothing that I can attribute it to. I don’t have metacam on hand so will just try to comfort her as best I can. I’ll see the vet on Monday if it’s not improved. Could be a long 2 days. :'(

My vet prescribed human paracetamol to Snowie some years ago. He weighs 35kg and she said one tablet is fine—500mg. It works well for him when his back flares up, which unfortunately has happened twice in the past two weeks. We took him to the vet on Tuesday and told her we’d given him a paracetamol tablet on Sunday night and she didn’t say it was wrong. @jazzmynn I’d suggest calling the emergency vet to ask if you can give it if you’re concerned. It is bad for the liver—also for humans—but it is a painkiller, and I’m guessing most meds are bad for the liver.

My vet told me as an emergency painkiller half a paracetamol with food every 8 hours or 3 a day. My dogs are about 26kg. That was when Scout had cold water tail from too much wagging. Hope Merlin and Ariel get their wags back very soon.

When moo was very ill paracetamol was the only thing she could take. We gave 1/2 a tab per day per my vet. When she couldn't swallow we used calpol? As she could swallow it. My vet told me it would be fine.

My very is very happy for us to use paracetamol on dogs, and has said she's a bit annoyed it rarely gets mentioned as a short term painkiller for them. Our dose is half a tablet three times a day which could be increased to three quarters of a tablet three times a day if necessary. Monty is around 29 kilos

Thanks for the advice all. She’s had a very quiet day, which is probably good for her tail. She’s a big tail wagger, and she just looks so unhappy because her tail is just hanging down. I think I’m more bothered by it than she is. I’ll see how she is in the morning and will call the vet if she’s showing signs of discomfort. Thank you.

Merlin was very good on the long drive over yesterday, but does seem about 90% better, I’d say. Which means he is back to chasing around and getting the the way while we are trying to prepare for my brother’s 50th birthday party tomorrow... Very glad he is feeling better.

The physiotherapist explained to me cold water tail comes about when the long muscles that run alongside the spine get cold or overworked and go into a kind of spasm. This has an effect all the way down into the dog’s tail, and is similar to a sciatica attack for humans (which if you’re ever suffered it, is horrible).

So pleased Merlin is feeling better. What a relief—you can enjoy the weekend festivities!

Does he also arch his back stiffly and hang his head down when walking? Or does he just show it in his drooped tail? And does he resist jumping up, say, into the car or onto the bed?

Snowie has had some bad episodes this week. Just now we went on a lovely walk with three other dogs (two were labs). Then we went to a plant shop, and he would not jump back into the car to go home. I fear he overdid it. I had to buy scones and cream from the shop cafe to lure him to the car, and then get help from a fellow shopper to lift him into the car. We’re hopefully seeing a physio this week (high in demand, difficult getting an appointment). I’ll ask her if she thinks it’s his slipped disc, or could it be limber tail? He did a lot of tail and body wagging and playbowing with one of the labs.
