Dogs in cars

How do you all put your dogs in the car?

Stanley has always ridden on the back seat. But now Rory sits in the back I don’t want them together unsupervised.

So Stanley has been riding shot gun. But I worry that it’s not very safe.

I don’t think I’ll get him in and out of the boot.. both our boots are quite high and I’m not sure he can jump that high, or that I’d want him to for his joints.

So I’m a bit stumped 🧐🙃

Hattie & Charlie ride in the boot of our Volvo Estate behind a Volvo metal dog guard. They jump in as it's not very high, but as Hattie is getting older I assist her or lift her in and out and I will do the same with Charlie when he needs it.

You could get a dog ramp Jen? xx

We bought our Skoda Fabia estate for Kipper :wasntme:, because it’s a low entry boot and decent inside space.

If Stanners is best off shotgun and you don’t have plans to replace the car anytime soon, could you get him a car harness?

Landrover discovery here with landrover metal dog guard. Cupar surprises me every time he jumps in. I swear he has a spring under him. We also have a cow mat with vet bed on top, so very cushioned.

Holly has the tailgate all to herself. It has a plastic lining and we put an absorbent dog liner on top for the muddy water. It also has a dog guard. I let her jump in but we've never allowed her to jump out.

I use a ramp for Ariel, and she rides in what I think some of you refer to as the boot. Large cozy space full of comfy mats and blankets. I lift her back out as she’s at a good height so I don’t need the ramp. She detests being picked up, hence the ramp, but is much less wiggly on the return trip to earth. 😁

Ella doesn't actually like going in the boot but one of the main reasons we stuck with the backseat was that we needed the boot space for the pram, and now the balance bike. Plus all of the other crap you take with you for the dog and kid (spare clothes, bag for dirty clothes, towels for Ella, water bowl for Ella etc.)

Chewie goes in the boot. We are just careful with where we park so it's not too much of a drop getting out.

The pram goes on the back seat!

We bought our Hyundai because the boot is a perfect size for Maxx and it isn't too high. He jumps in and out which I sometimes worry about but he is way too heavy to pick up so we don't really have a choice. The car is constantly infested with fur (it entwines itself in the upholstery) and wet dog smell. But we just live with it. We also have a SUV that Maxx only goes in if we are going down the coast for the weekend but we are trying to sell it as we never use it. It's 2014/15 model with only 40,000 kilometres. No nibbles yet

Jumping in never seems a problem; our Mercedes estate is low to the ground and even Ginny jumps in! They all jump out except her; even though she hates being lifted, she’s learned to come to where I am standing when she’s ready to get out (she sometimes needs a minute to assess the location first) and I scoop her down to the floor.
My dogs travel by car so rarely that I don’t overly worry about the impact on their joints from those times we do, considering the other jumping they do daily on our walks 😬

Snowie rides on the backseat. Mine is the dog car and it is filthy dirty and the upholstery Is entwined in hair—per @Lab_adore ’s brilliant description!! I can’t remove it!! If people need to ride on the backseat, I put down a clean towel.

I had a very dense (heavy!) foam step made, covered in a thick durable fabric and with a fabric handle. I keep it on the boot. It was meant to help Snowie get in and out of the back. Instead he leaps over it!!! Refuses to use it. But I keep it just in case he has a back flare up and can’t jump in; then I can lift him using his harness and help him step onto the foam step and into the car.

@snowbunny point about her dogs rarely travelling by car is a definite consideration. Our dogs rarely travel by car either so I tend not to worry too much about the jumping in/out but am aware of their age and assist if there's any hesitation. xx
Yes, definitely a good point. It also helps to explain my OTT as Ella is in the car every few days and I nearly always lift her out of the car onto the ground 😁
