Echo - Guide Dog

I took Echo for a proper free run in the woods this morning. He did really well on recall and absolutely loved it! He’s been on the long line for weeks now so galloped and galloped around like a young horse!

We only met one other dog and, thankfully, he was back on lead by then. He’s rather late having his purses emptied and only has one thing on his mind when he meets other dogs! But he sat nicely for me and let her go past.

So I’m re-gaining my confidence. I lost a lot when my shoulder packed in. I couldn’t hold him properly, if needed, with only one working arm. I’ve discovered confidence is crucial when it comes to having big, lively pups round other dogs.

Today Echo was on the long line on our track through the trees. Suddenly two cats hared towards him, obviously one chasing the other. Then they raced either side of Echo, both screeching!

I braced myself, expecting the worst.

He sat down and then watched them with great interest! Good boy! Lots of treats followed.

We had a better free run today at the reservoir. I still had to keep him on lead when other dogs were around but he sat happily and watched them, he didn’t try to pull me over. Progress!

I did the ‘hiding behind trees’ thing and it worked a treat, he came looking for me every time.

We are both gaining some confidence again after lockdown (he was only allowed on the lead or long line for ten weeks -that’s a long time for a pup!)

Our zoom puppy class had a question and answer session with the Big Boss of all puppies yesterday after puppy class.

Even ‘tho the big schools are open, none of the local mobility teams instructors are out of furlough yet, so it’s very slow. She said not to expect any of our pups to go in before November.

She was very reassuring. She said our pups were excellent in the class (Echo always is 🙄, just like my son - good as good at school, a devil at home!) and that they won’t suffer at all from having no formal bus/train/shop/cafe training. She’s seeing it all as an interesting experiment.

Im happy to have Echo for as long as it takes - despite his hormones and nortyness!
