GGJ is at the Vet's.

I've just taken her for a short walk, which I removed her collar for, then she had her tea, then some games to distract her. Going for a shower shortly so put the collar back on. I was worried that she'd back away but she didn't, so she's maybe getting more used to it. It could also have something to do with a tube of squeezy cheese. I don't feel I can go out and leave her though, as she keeps getting the collar stuck on things and without it on she is far too intent on licking her stitches unless distracted. The other collars should be arriving soon though and may be better for her and I've also ordered a boot that's meant to stop the licking of stitches, so that might help. I've got plenty of supplies in, so no need to start sending food parcels just yet!

@Candy when Lilly had a biopsy on her back leg - just below her hock - we used a buster but she could still reach. Maybe it wasnt big enough but if you use it, watch GGJ like a hawk until you know she definitely cant get her teeth to those stitches x

Thanks Jacqui-S. I have a sneaky weaky feeling you're going to be right, because on the whole if she's not eating or asleep then she's at them. Just need to know I've explored every alternative though. I truly am watching her like a hawk,! Your concern and advice is much appreciated. xx

Poor GGJ. I don’t think I’d like to wear a plastic cone. Hopefully the comfy cone will arrive soon. And her wound will heal quickly. She does look sweet in that cone, though!!

Snowie has never worn a cone. He’s had the odd stitch or a wound, which I’ve let him lick if he wanted. He didn’t lick for long and soon lost interest. I wish I could stop the glopping licking of his nether regions in the early hours, though!! That wakes me up!!

Don't let her lick once she's started she won't stop. You don't want infection introduced into the wound. Sleep with her sit with her sit on her foot but don't let her lick. After a few days the soreness goes and they are less interested. Give it chance to heal. I've done this many times the strict no lick rule helps them to get a quick uncomplicated recovery. Doug nearly lost part of his foot because he licked a wound. Rorys serious foot injury healed cleanly and quickly because I did not let him lick.

Red’s shaved leg area got infected from her licking it. It was horrible and took a while to heal. She totally shut down when we first put the cone on but she got used to it. It’s horrible seeing them like that but in the end she was letting me put it on easily. She slept in it too. Dislikes those cones but it was essential

Several years ago, Tuppence eventually had to wear a cone and an inflatable collar after she had cut her leg badly. Somehow she managed to lick the wound despite the plastic cone, so it was desperate measures, suggested by the vet!

The vet warned very strongly about the risk of infection through licking of stitches, so I have been hyper vigilant, only taking the cone off when I could pay her enough attention to make sure no licking was going on. She slept in the cone and woke me by crying at 5am but it was because she wanted a wee, having drunk more water than usual, having had more treats than usual. She settled back to sleep fine afterwards.
Today she is far more her usual self, which means she is trotting round after me everywhere and keeps ramming the backs of my legs with the cone! This gets a little bit more painful each time as it's always in the same place and I am anticipating some interesting bruises. She is also still getting it stuck on things and it makes the stairs a struggle for her. However we now have the Pawz and she was much happier on our tiny walk with one of these on than she was with the drip bag. Then, hot on the heals of the postman bearing my MLF calendars came Mr Amazon with the Buster collar and the TFENG boots. She let me put one of these on her paw, had a little lick at it then left it alone and doesn't seem to mind it at all! So the big collar is off and we're both much happier! I'm still keeping a close eye on her in case she starts chewing the boot but they're designed to protect paws post surgery and are breathable so if she'll keep it on that's problem solved! If not, I'll have a go with the Buster collar.

Yes, the Buster collar is no match for her whatsoever! She can reach her boot and whisk it off in two shakes of a puppy dog's tail, so it's back to the big one again. @Naya has very kindly sent me an alternative collar which is softer, so we'll see if that's any better when it arrives. It would be good to find something that doesn't get her stuck in places although she is learning to manage this better. It also might save my bruised legs!

Good luck. The “old forum” has my long tales of woe with Simba and the collar. The crashing and bashing into everything was soooooooooo annoying, although he didn’t care one bit.....leading to cone degradation....leading to cone repair with duct tape....Leading to the two-cone-switcheroo manuever while the repair happened....leading to pup realizing he could eat said duct tape...leading to a doggie mum not-so-quietly slowly going insane....:weary:

Actually she seems to be working out how to manoeuvre it and is coping much better than Solstice, who was the original owner of said collar, who sounds similar to Simba with it, apart from the fact that it distressed her. Joy is a little thinker and often surprises me by coping with things better than I expect her to.

@Candy - Only just seen this post, hope GGJ isn't too frustrated with the collars and her paw is on the mend. Pepper sends his love.

And once she's recovered we should see if we can find a date that works for you and @Boogie as Pepper would love to see GGJ and Tatze again.
Yes, yes, YES! We would love that! Joy was really comfortable with Pepper and she would be very happy to see him again
She's coming on OK, more herself, stitches still intact, wound clean and seems to be starting to heal. Meetings up with Mags and Echo for coffee and lunch next Thursday. We could compare diaries then perhaps and get back to you.
