Guide Dogs and Puppies

That is very upsetting to read @Charlie. I felt very sad for a guide dog here, he used to walk with his tail down looking utterly miserable, I vaguely knew the people who would look after him sometimes, they lived opposite my friend and they said the dog was very stressed.

Oh he is beautiful . Does it cost a lot Boogie for a GD?
Yes it does. £2,500 to name a pup £5,000 to name a pup and get updates up to qualification. £10,000 to name a pup and get lifelong updates. There is a £5 a month scheme where you get updates but you don’t get an ‘exclusive’ pup. Spencer is sponsored by Marks and Spencer (The York branch) and they paid the full whack so they get a visit and lots of updates.

I named a pup Rachel after my Mum and I findraised for Coffee in a Facebook group I run for Guide Dog owners and puppy walkers (which is where these photos and stories come from, with permission)

@Cath

I’ve just had the email from the puppy team about the next update - a lot to report on!

Hi Mags,

My name is L... and I will be calling soon for another update on Spencer’s progress so we can send a pupdate to his sponsors. If there is a particular day/time which would best suit you, please let us know. If I don’t hear from you, I’ll just try in the next couple of days.

To help prepare you, below is a list of questions I’ll be likely to ask you during the call. If you would prefer to answer these via email, please do so.

  • What are you and he/she working on at the moment?
  • How is this being done?
  • Has he/she mastered all of the basic commands?
  • What things does he/she struggle with currently?
  • Has he/she got an established spending routine?
  • If not, do they do gutter relief?
  • Is anything being done to help this?
  • How is he/she at walking in the correct guiding position?
  • Does he/she mix well with other dogs and animals?
  • Has he/she mastered all forms of transport?
  • Have they been on any unusual types such as a boat or tram?
  • How does he/she behave in quiet situations such as a café or restaurant?
  • Is he/she happy in a busy town centre?
  • How is he/she when left alone?
  • Has he/she met the sponsor, did he/she enjoy this?
  • What do you hope to do over the next few weeks?
  • (IF FEMALE) Have they had their first season? If yes, did this worry her at all?
  • Has he/she been castrated/spayed?
  • If yes, how did they react to this procedure and recovery?
  • Have they mentioned whether he/she is Prospective Breeding Stock? If yes, are they at the testing stage yet or have they been accepted?
  • Do you know when he/she is going into the Training School?
  • Have they visited the Sponsor? Did he/she enjoy meeting the sponsor?

I look forward to speaking with you soon.

Many thanks for all you do,

L...
