Homer being sick

Not such a great start. He regurgitated at least half of his dinner in 5 handful amounts throughout the night. I’m not sure if this is early days and his oesophagus has been irritated by the procedure. The endoscope showed his oesophagus is very floppy.
He is the first dog to have a balloon to open the lower oesophagus sphincter at the RVC and only the second dog in the country to have this procedure.
If this doesn’t work I’m not sure there’s much more we can do for him. He is so skinny.

My physio’s son of 2 years old refused to eat. They discovered he regurgitates and it burnt his oesophagus, which caused pain and so he refused to eat cos of the pain. They have no idea why he can’t keep food down. He only drinks a bottle. But still was vomiting.

She said physically you’d never know cos he’s super energetic and he’s the correct height/weight for his age.

They’ve done every test available and nothing has come up to say what is wrong.

A few weeks ago they decided to insert a mickey. I’d never heard of a mickey. It’s like a peg, but is fitted permanently and has a soft cap. He can race around as before.

They decided they had to get nutrition into him before he started losing weight. They also had the sphincter tightened between the oesaphagus and the stomach. After the op he refused to take a bottle at all, but they encouraged him to—took 2 weeks to agree to take a bottle.

She said the next step is to go overseas to find a doctor who has seen more of these cases.

But just a thought: has your vet considered a mickey (MIC-KEY trade name) for Homer?

How is Homer today? How are you?

I saw my physio again yesterday and we chatted more about her son and his condition. She said he is not fussed by the Mickey. He can swim, run, tumble, anything that a person without it can do. I mentioned Homer and she was very interested in hearing about all the tests he’s had and how he’s coping. She wondered whether you’d had him tested for an autoimmune disease? She said it was one of the first things they tested her son for. Basically, when food enters the oesophagus, the body has an immune response to the food and causes the oesophagus to lose function, no peristalsis. The food just sits in the oesophagus. There is treatment: targeted immunosuppressant. Her son doesn’t have the autoimmune disease, so they are still in the dark as to what is causing his problems. Her son has no swallow reflex.
