Homer's tooth

So now this last week one on Homer's canines has turned a dull grey colour. They have been warn down since he was a few years old do to our lack of noticing what was going on. The vet has always said keep an eye out for any change of colour.
So they have given us the option of two different veterinarian dentists.
Or Welcome to The Ralph! | The Ralph
Which has a snazzier website and closer to us.
Then there's DentalVets
In Scotland! I wish I could take him up to Scotland!

Good that you have some options. I’d look at their qualifications. You could also chat to your vet about their experiences with these specialists. If they’ve recommended them they’re probably both good options.

Prior to R taking her dog to The Ralph, they sent a whole lot of introductory blurb. She said it was very comprehensive, and the questionnaire asked things such as: "What sort of food bowl does your dog prefer? What sort of water bowl does your dog prefer? Does your dog like being petted? What is his favourite way of being petted, and is there any area that he would rather not be touched? Does he have a favourite toy or game? How do you play?"

She said she also loved the fact that they list all their student vet nurses as members of staff: as a one-upon-a-time student nurse, that resonated with her. If they value their people, that says a lot about them.

Then, she sent me this message while Bo was in:

I’ve just called the hospital for an update (knowing full well there wouldn’t actually be one, but, y’know...) and the receptionist said, “Hold on, Miss L. I’ll just call up to the ward.”

The ward! Bless! I had visions of him sitting in his bed with pyjamas on! He’s a bit stressed, apparently, but they’ve given him a pheromone-infused neckerchief to calm him.

This was for neurology rather than dentistry, but I would imagine their standard of care is the same throughout. I'm sure the other places are also excellent, it's just this one I have any connection to. Good luck with your decision :)

We’ve got an appointment on 25th March. Most likely root canal for the canine and possibly an extraction of the molar. Although a few weeks away. It’s the first day of Easter school holidays so I don’t need to arrange a day off work. Poor receptionist asked if he was on any medication so she got a full run down of him being on Sertraline and all his anxieties, with Homer grumbling and growling that I was on the phone too long and embarrassing him.

That’s great @JES72. A bit of a wait but it’s good timing by the sound of it. It’s a lengthy op as a root canal is slow, careful work so he’ll prob be a bit out of sorts for a couple of days after the experience. He’ll appreciate having you on tap :)

Sorry to read about Homer’s teeth. I’ve only just seen this thread now. It’s great that you have the appointment so that’s one less thing to worry about. Poor Homer. Won’t be fun having dental surgery. Hopefully he’ll get nice jelly to eat afterwards! 😁

With various delays Homer his now currently at the Ralph vet in Marlow having treatment. He went off quite happily with a wag of his tail while I am in bits with worry. Hopefully root canal to save the canine.

I absolutely hate all this distancing when it comes to medical or veterinarian treatment. It's not helped either that his usual vet is off on maternity leave. Or the fact that my boss has been difficult about me taking leave for a vet appointment during term time. And I doubt his astronomically expensive insurance will even cover a penny of the cost.
