Had our appointment this morning. Harley has put on weight even though she’s eating a lot less so is on a new weight control diet when the food arrives on Thursday. She has 2 very large fatty lumps in her tummy which aren’t helping either.
The vet was very concerned that she’s only walking 10-15 mins every other day and that she stops every few mins. She looked at her leg and said she could see she was on a lot of pain and the infection is still there as there is still swelling. Harley constantly licked her lips whilst the vet gently examined her. She heard Harley panting which she said is a sign that she’s in pain. Her pain meds have been upped too.
I asked lots of questions which she answered and we had a long discussion around quality of life. Harley has always been very active and loved her walks, but now has to be coaxed out.
The vet called me this afternoon after she spoke to the surgeon and he wants to see us tomorrow at 5pm. I am trying to be calm and not worry, but it’s so hard.

I can understand how anxious you must feel. I, too, get in an absolute state. Tomorrow’s appointment can’t come quick enough. I hope the surgeon can give you some good options to help poor Harley. Hopefully the extra pain meds will be already be helping this evening. Thinking of you xxx

I hope the extra pain meds will help Harley and there’s a way forward to curb the infection. Thinking of you and hoping tomorrow’s appointment goes well.

Ah Naya, how horrible, I am really sorry. But you knew she was in pain anyway, so it is good the vet and the surgeon realize. Keeping everything crossed for you today.

Not long been home. The surgeon said she does still have a slight infection still and has a bit of a temperature. He carried out a full examination and said he thinks the surgery is a success on her leg and the problem is now her front paws/legs as they have had to take the additional weight for a few months and this where she is in a lot of pain. Her arthritis has gotten worse. We discussed everything and he suggested we throw everything at her for 2 weeks to see if it reduce the pain and get her moving again. She had a librella injection today and she now has new antibiotics and gabapentin on top of metacam and paracetamol and her other antibiotics. Her diet food arrives tomorrow so we will start her on it asap. The surgeon was great and explained his thoughts and said he completely understands that things can’t go on as they are but he hopes that a combination of what he’s prescribed will make a difference. We have a consult with him in 2 weeks to reassess. If there’s no changes we will make the right decision for her, but if there are improvements we will carry on with whatever she needs. When we left the vets he gave her a hug and a kiss and said she is such a lovely dog with a gentle soul and he will be rooting for her 💕. Her then added that he wasn’t charging his consult fee which was really nice of him.
I am feeling a bit more hopeful tonight. Its going to be a tough few weeks, but I feel there is some hope that she could get better.

I wonder if a different antibiotic might help to clear up the infection? Weight loss could also be helpful but that will take longer. Have you tried hydrotherapy? Also you could add Ketamine and perhaps some massage?
I have called a hydrotherapy place tonight and their therapist is calling me tomorrow to book in 😊

I was truly impressed by how he handled Harley and the way he supported me through the appointment.
