Kennel Cough

Red has kennel cough (she had the vaccination in February but there are different strains). I really hope I have caught it quick. She started coughing last evening. We saw the vet this afternoon and she’s had an anti inflammatory injection and we have more medication. She has a raised temperature.

We had her booked in at the kennels next week for a day and night but I’ve cancelled that. The lady at the kennels said it is absolutely rife all around here at the moment and some dogs are very poorly with it. Needless to say, we’ll be watching Red very carefully and keeping her away from other dogs.

If you have carpets, I recommend putting towels down. All the coughing can cause vomiting. When Snowie had kennel cough as a puppy, our bedroom (where he sleeps at night) was covered in vomit!! Didn’t think of towels then.

Poor Red. Hope she feels better soon.

Something made me put a large towel down on the tiled floor in the room she sleeps in last night. Was glad I had!

The cough and associated retching/gagging is horrible. I gave her honey last night and will again today. Poor girl.

That will pass soon she'll just feel pants for a few days. There's some nasty KC bugs going around at the moment. I never usually go to the vets as my dogs have only ever had mild reactions to KC, but Iver was so ill this time that I had to get treatment. Luckily Rory did not get it. I hope she's ok soon it really can knock them flat.

The cough and retching is just horrible - like a honking goose. Bless her. She had her second dose of Loxicom yesterday tea time and seems to have tolerated that. She’s enjoying the honey. She’s coming to me for reassurance when she starts coughing. F walked her really early but I’m not taking her lunchtime - don’t want to risk meeting other dogs. She seems happy to rest so that’s what we’ll do. I remember Sky getting kennel cough years ago but it was nothing like this.

I think it's a really nasty strain. I just kept Iver at home rested him he was just exhausted. I've never experienced anything like it either.

Normally she’s ‘pestering’ me for her lunchtime walk but not today. She’s fast asleep 💤 . How long did Iver have it for @SwampDonkey?
He was only coughing horribly and coughing up foamy sick for about a day and a half but he was very sleep and flat which seemed different than normal KC so I took him to the vet and he had a slight chest infection starting and an eye infection so he was given anti biotics. I kept him in for a week but honestly he was so ill he wanted to sleep. The second week just short hops to an empty small park and home once a day. He was very quiet. The average from start to finish is about 2 weeks.
