Oh dear, not good. Hope he is better with rest and that you get some answers when you get home. In the meantime enjoy the lovely restful garden :)

So sorry for you and Merlin. Such a worry. Aren’t dogs meant to improve our mental health?!!

We had a beach holiday and on the first day Snowie hurt his foot. Like you I thought the worst. But it was just a cut, probably from shells, between his paw pads. It was very painful for him to walk on the sand. I used a lot of Vaseline to plug up the wound so that the sand couldn’t rub it, which helped a lot.

Have you checked between Merlin’s paw pads for a cut, or maybe he has a shard of glass or a thorn or a shell stuck in there?

I hope he recovers quickly. We feel so bad for them when they’re in pain.

Oh poor Merlin, I'm so sorry to hear this. What a worry. At least you've got a plan for once you get back to Germany. I hope you're all able to enjoy the rest of your England holiday. Cuddles to Merlin.

Oh no! So sorry to hear of the latest problem with Merlin :(. At CT scan does sound a sensible option at this time to try and find out what is going on so a rehab plan can be put in place. You have my sympathy - it is so hard sometimes managing a young dog with dysplasia while at the same time trying to maintain healthy joints and allowing them to have fun. A small example that may help when you feel down - Juno has been doing really well the last few weeks following restricted exercise to alleviate the sore right shoulder. Well today her best friend, Jen, arrived to stay for a few days. Juno has done I don't know how many zoomies around the garden, been jumping in and out of her pool and bouncing around the garden most of the afternoon. Well no surprise really but she was showing stiffness in right leg by early evening :( . Not unexpected. Should I have managed her play with Jen better? Probably but only by shutting one in the house and leaving one in the garden and then switching. Not much fun for either of them. But in real terms they only see each other occasionally. They are more like sisters than friends and when all is said and down Juno has to enjoy life, and sometimes that means rest for a few days afterwards. I would love for her to be able to live pain free but even more I want her to have fun and enjoy life (within reason of course).

Poor boy. Hopefully he’s just overdone it on the beach. Harley tends to limp/not weight bear on her left leg after a period of swimming / running in water. Rest and painkillers usually help. CT scan might be a good idea just to check. Big hugs to you all x

Bad news and yet hopefully good news!!

Woke up this morning to find Merlin still completely unable to put any weight on his left rear leg - but this morning his foot was swollen, warm to the touch, and obviously painful. Back to the vets we went... They suspected some damage or an infection in his paw, and sedated him to have a good look around. They found his paw was indeed infected, with an incipient abscess forming, so they opened it to drain. They looked, but couldn't find any seed or piece of shell or similar that could have caused the infection, but there was a tiny hole between his pads, as M.F. had suggested. So now he is back with us, dopey once again from the sedatives, and has antibiotics. They haven't bound the paw, but left it open to drain and heal in the air. Poor lad, hopefully this will get better soon - and phew!!!! if it really wasn't somehow down to his bad hips.

Here's the sad one, note the swollen back left paw.

I have to say though, that I am still very concerned about him. There have been several unexplained limping episodes, and I (and OH, who is normally much more stoical than I am) are still inclined to see an orthopedic specialist when we get back, at the very least to put our minds at rest, but also to find out if there is anything else going on.

Oh Merly, what are you like?! Please do stop worrying the hoomans!!

I think you might as well carry on and have the scan done. Once we have these little niggles, it's hard to silence them. If it's something, knowing is better. If it's nothing, we can tell that annoying little voice to shut up.

I had started to talk myself into Squidge having problematic hips because of how she runs and the fact she has a patch of hair on that side which grows in a funny direction (which can apparently indicate joint problems?!) so I had her scanned while I was in the UK. Best to know one way or the other.

Poor boy! Absolutely though get the referral. They are so detailed and can give you really valuable information and the best direction to take with rehab. Especially in the early days of prognosis, before any modification of joints occurs. This can happen with very subtle changes in gait, which then leads to these joint changes, and it's these joint changes which cause the damage later on.
OH took Benson and Casper to our rehab vet, and she immediately could see exactly what work we had been doing with both dogs, just by watching them walk, amazing! She has really given me hope going forward with Benson.

Poor Merlin dopey again and yet more worry for you. Has your vet told you to bathe the abcess and keep it open so it heels from the inside out rather than scabbing over ? Murphy (my old lab) developed an abscess above his tail due to a puncture wound from next doors alsation which I hadn't seen happen. The puncture wound must have scabbed over trapping germs in so causing the abscess. The vet told me to use hibiscrub rather than salt and water so the abscess didn't scab over to allow it to drain and not trap germs.
