Might be the last time

We took both dogs to the coast today. We wanted Sky to swim in the sea - she has always loved the sea and sand. She had a fabulous swim and managed the walking quite well until the end bit when we decided to go for lunch. We had a bit of a walk to get to where we wanted to eat - she was struggling with walking a bit by then. However, on the way back, she kept stopping. DH and Red had walked in front of us so got back to the car a good 15 minutes before us. Made me so very sad as a few times, I had to pull her lead to get her to move as we had to get to the car and there is no way she can be carried. I could feel the tears coming as I think that is the last time we can do that kind of trip all together. She is very tired now but perked up when she saw me taking Red to play with a neighbours dog - she knew where we were going but I felt she had done enough for today. Poor Sky - love her so much.

Shorter walks might be enough for her for a long while yet.
I do know how you feel though. When I have had a dog getting old I try to fill their lives with Joy. Bear is getting towards the end and I am doing all the things he loves doing but on a reduced scale.
My thoughts go out to you.

I’m sure she enjoys everything you do with her, even if it is a ‘last’ for that particular outing. Hopefully she will keep going strong for a while yet x

That’s sad - but she must have had a lovely time. The weather certainly hasn’t been helping at all. Maybe with a bit of adjustment she’ll still be able to enjoy outings with Red. It can be difficult, though, as older dogs often continue to push themselves into doing what they’ve always done and don’t immediately realise that they’re getting tired more quickly.
