New puppy owner

Oh, gosh, as youngsters my lot always came back from walks completely wired. That's when zoomies are most likely to happen, even now. I think it's just everything is so mind-blowing at that age and it raises their adrenaline. When they get home, they don't have anything to focus that adrenaline on so it comes out as a burst of energy. They normally flop shortly afterwards. A stuffed Kong is a godsend for after walks :)

We also have an Aquasorb towel (actually we have three, one for the car, one for the house, one because I was greedy and they are absolutely brilliant). But we used to use an ordinary old towel to dry Pongo when he was a puppy, it became a great game of wrestle and meant we could play with him while still shoving the towel in his mouth to bite to save our fingers! He is five years old now but when he comes in wet he still wants to play The Towel Game....he charges the towel like a bull to a matador, then throws himself onto his back to get his tummy dried off, and goes into a zen-like state of calm while each paw gets dried off one by one...we call it his spa pedicure...

With a puppy, it's best to make it really really easy to start with. So just put a couple of bits of dry kibble in it and let him knock them out. It shouldn't be challenging to him at all. When he starts getting excited when he sees the kong, you can start making it a bit more difficult. Look at the link Kate posted for ideas, or you might just choose to use his kibble soaked in some water to soften it to start off with, if new foods upset his tummy. Or mix a little tuna water through the kibble to make it extra tasty. Once he has the hang of kongs stuffed with soft food, you can start freezing them so they last a bit longer. For a little puppy, I used the puppy medium size; as he starts getting bigger, you can go on to the large ones. I use red ones (original), but if he turns into a power chewer, the black ones are more robust.

Biting the lead is normally a sign of either over-excitement or frustration. In a puppy who is just starting to go on walks, it's more likely the former. As someone who has two very anxious Labs and who went out of their way to get a confident one third time around, I'll say enjoy it! I can understand why people pull their hair out at their Labradors' behaviour, but having Willow and Shadow, I can say that Luna's antics just make me laugh. Don't be in too much of a rush to suppress these things; when they demonstrate this joie de vivre, it's really a wonderful thing :D

Yes , and always remember that hopefully you will have your lovely adult Labrador ( or any dog ) for many years, but puppyhood slips by without us realising . One day, they are babes , and before you know it , they are all grown up . Pups are tiring , fact , but enjoy this time , it doesn't last for long x
