New Toffee Thread

I tried a different tack with the boys playing together today. Usually they are pretty hyped up when they get together, so today I did individual training with them, then waited until they had settled in their beds, then opened the baby gate.

Ripple just wandered out rather than his normal full pelt, then he took one of Toffee's toys and went off quietly for a chew. Toffee spent ages trying to get him to play but Ripple actually rolled on his back and only engaged when he dropped the toy. It was much quieter and no mad charging about, although I wasn't very keen on Toffee licking Ripple's "bits" while he was upside down .

Toffee has now moved on to counter surfing. Thursday he nearly managed to reach my daughters ham rolls, yesterday I caught him licking the flora packet, and today he was nosing a full pot of Pro-Fibre (for his anal glands) along the bench  . Definitely time to start being more careful. Ripple, for all his faults, has rarely done much counter surfing.

Toilet training is sloooooowly moving on. Toffee is gradually developing the Labrador 'I need to go out stare' , however we're still at the blink and you miss it stage. He still disappears off for a quick poo behind the sofa if we're not careful, and will still poo in his crate rather than asking to go out. This is the longest any of my boys have ever taken to toilet train.

On the plus side he's so affectionate and kissy, something that Ripple has never been. He also walks really nicely on his lead most of the time; when I was away even OH commented what a pleasure he was to walk .

Counter surfing is tricky I think @SteffiS because it can take you by suprise - one minute they're a little bundle that's comfortably too short to reach anything, and the next they're giraffes that can reach the back of all the units  That was our experience anyway! We're still coming to terms with the need to keep things out of the way; I'm very laissez faire, so sometimes it's only when Kipper's nosing something on the kitchen table that I think 'd'oh, should have thought of that'. Happily it was wise words on this forum that made the point he'll keep doing it a lot more if it's rewarding, so there's never any food left out any more...(famous last words)...

I live with the counter surfing. Shadow almost never does it, and Willow is so much better than she used to be. None of them will do it when I'm around, and when I'm prepping they sit outside the kitchen anyway. But I've never put in any effort to stop them doing it, other than trying to keep my surfaces clear. If they do get something, I just shrug my shoulders and move on with life. There's far more interesting stuff to spend my doggy training time doing than teaching them not to counter surf.

Yep, I agree -- for me it's just a question of not leaving stuff in grabbing distance. Interestingly, she doesn't take stuff off the table which is lower than the worktop, and it seems if food is on a plate on the top she doesn't take it. I don't know if it is connected in her mind to going to her bed when we eat.

And how are Ripple and Toffee getting on together @SteffiS ?
There seems to be quite a bit of improvement, but I don't let them play together too much as it gets rough very quickly and Toffee keeps yelping - although that doesn't stop him going back for more. Ripple keeps pinching Toffee's toys and growls if he goes near them, quite interesting for a dog that was never bothered about toys when he was a puppy.

They always travel together in the crate if they're both in the car, but I must admit I sometimes get fed up with the low level noises that go on a lot of the time. It actually works reasonably well as Ripple likes to lie down and Toffee likes to look out the back window.

I do training with them together indoors about 3 times a week and that's going well. Walks are usually separate, if OH is home we take one each. Sometimes I go out with my daughter and we have one each or her partner will take Ripple out for a long walk when he finishes work. On the days when I'm on my own I feel as if I spend half the day dog walking, you think I'd be really thin but I compensate by eating cakes and biscuits .
