Our Golden Oldies... how are they doing?

Well… I wasn’t expecting to have a good cry before bed tonight 🥺 But, it’s so lovely to hear the age of some of the dogs now 🥰 It’s really hard to see them ageing, but it is also such a blessing. Give all your senior pups (actually all aged dogs) a big gentle squeeze from me and cherish every single day

It really doesn’t seem that long ago that we were discussing our young dogs, so it’s lovely to catch up!

Wispa was 12 in November and although she’s very grey round her muzzle she still usually looks and behaves like a younger dog. She occasionally needs help to jump into the car after a walk and slows down a bit towards the end of a longer walk, but otherwise looks very sprightly. Maybe it’s time to start her on glucosamine, or would YuMOVE be more suitable, even though she doesn’t need it yet?
Tuppence is 10 and still thinks she’s a puppy, although she enjoys sleeping on the sofa more than she used to!

Shamas is doing better this year than last. Partly due to his weight loss (he's down to 75lbs with an ideal weight of 70) partly because of the weather.

2022, his pain levels and mobility got so bad that we got him a special harness. I do swear by helpemup harnesses. I couldn't have kept Shamas mobile without it. We trialed Librella, but he's got a neurological drag on his back right leg, which got worse while he was on the shots, and he began tripping...falling down the front steps, and pulling his legs painfully behind him. We took him off the shot for this reason. But it helped while he was on it, and I feel that he's maintained benefits from the time he had it? He's certainly fitter, and more mobile than before we started it

I was truly afraid for winter. Last year I frequently ran the quality of life test, and he scored too high. Often. I decided that if spring didn't improve him, I'd have to make that decision. I waited, and hoped. I marked his good days and bad days on the calendar, and decided that as long as there were more good than bad, we'd hold out for him. Thankfully, warn weather did him wonders, and we made a point to work on his weaknesses, and prepare him for this year's cold season.

I think with his gains over the summer, he'll get through to spring with minimal pain. He's got his trench coat, and metacam. And a space heater. HE chooses to clamber onto the couch to sleep now, instead of sleeping on the floor. He struggles to get up from a lay now, and has sores on his elbows. And one on his right knee that's suspicious looking but I don't want a diagnosis for. At his age, I couldn't do anything for it anyway. The vet and I agree that quality of life is paramount for him. He's a happy ole boy :)

His eyes are often cloudy, but the vet's not too worried. And he's often not quite there. You can call his name and it's like he doesn't hear you. Then when he does, he's all happy, dopey, nothing behind the eyes. Like his brain turned off and he's just happy to be involved lol. We get the funniest looks from people on walks.

"Shaaaamaaaas! SHamas! Hellooooo! Hi! Come on, we're going this way. Good boy, come on ole man"

Cue happy doggo plodding behind

He's 12-13 now?
We take a lot of inside walks now. Inside is easier on him. He likes people places
