Parish Clerk

I did consider posting this in 'Old Dogs, New Tricks' , but it seems I have got myself a job as a Parish Clerk to our local Parish Council. I volunteered when they mentioned they were having a job finding anyone to do the work, not realising it was a paid position with quite a lot of responsibilities.
I had an interview yesterday and was offered the job, although to be fair I was the only applicant.

Only 8 hours a week, but it's so long since I was in real employment that I am wondering what I have let myself in for. I think it will be a steep learning curve, particularly as there is a 4 month gap since the last clerk left, so lots of bits to catch up on. Working from home mostly so I will be here for Derek and the boys, just need to kick my brain into gear :slap:.

Oh hooray, I bet they’re lucky to have you! It’ll be a whirlwind to begin with but you’ll soon find your feet. And if you don’t take to it it’s not the end of the world, good on you for giving it a shot. Good luck!

My husband used to be a Parish Clerk, way back it was relatively easy, then it gradually changed and isn't so easy now, a lot of paper work from councils and accounting. However, it will be interesting and you will get to know a lot about many things. 😊

It sounds ideal, Steff, a good means of doing something interesting and indulging in your love of spreadsheets AND getting paid for it too! :)

Just thought I’d report back on my first week, definitely a lot to learn.

My first day there was a 2 hour parish council meeting at which I was supposed to take the minutes, luckily it was also recorded as when I looked back at my notes I appeared to have missed huge chunks of discussion .

The emails have been continuous, plus phone calls every day. I needed to update information on the website, but it was down for 4 days for maintenance. And I haven’t even been given the finance files yet :shake:.

My 8 hours turned into 18 this week, I’m completely 🤯 . But, the main thing is I am enjoying it, my brain is finding cells it had forgotten about and I’m surprised how much I remember about the idiosyncrasies of Microsoft programs  .
