Pet Insurance

Just remember to consider you have to declare everything on her vet record to the new insurers as pre-existing conditions or they won’t be covered. I know so many people who have been bitten by that by changing insurance companies and when they’ve gone to claim they’ve said they’re not covered because of something on their record which wasn’t declared from years ago.
Ooh yes thank you for this - that’s so important to know

Decisions, decisions
Yes I really hate it

Costs hiked up enormously once she ws about 6.
That’ll be it then, why it’s gone up so much. Red is now 6

:giggl: Hubby 60th Birthday is on Sunday. I wonder if I can get him to do it. Hubby has just said "Are you sure that's not for the dog's age" and then "Can you get cheep car insureance if you have an old dog!" Homer's insureance is about 100x £25 a year with Direct Line. :veryconfused: I hate to know what they will hike it up to in August when it gets renewed.

Thanks for that, that may be the way I will go - will think about it when Pet Plan new premium comes in for the forthcoming year.

We're with Many Pets as well and Poppy is currently £42.43 per month ie £509.16 per annum which I didn't think was too bad considering Lady ended up over £1300 per annum towards the end. I've just put my first claim in as well so it will be interesting to see how they deal with it. £274.86 to induce vomiting after a mince pie episode.

We have pet plan for Neo. Due to his anxiety issues and ongoing (stupidly expensive) medication I’ve claimed a lot, but they didn’t hike it up much at renewal time. Based on my experience so far I would recommend them. My previous girl was with Direct Line who were also pretty good.

My own personal take on pet insurance is if you can claim for it, then claim. It doesn’t really work like cars where you build up a no claims discount you can carry over, they seem to put it up every year regardless, even more so when your pet gets older so you might as well claim for what you can. I know some companies offer money back incentives not to claim but I’ve found the saving often doesn’t make it worthwhile compared to the cost of care and medication. This is just my opinion though, I’m sure others may have different thoughts on this.

Hope you find something that works for you and Red.

Thank you for this @Parodius - food for thought.

Many Pets haven’t got back to me today which is disappointing but maybe they are busy. See what happens next week

@David thank you for your info - I suppose £681.79 is about right then as Red is older than Poppy

I'm the same. I send every single vet bill off to see if there's anything I can claim!

We also get a couple of extras in the policy where we can claim $50 twice a year (without excess) something like annual vax, worming, flea treatment, council registration etc.

So Fergus is 6 years old, I don’t think we’ve claimed at all. His current insurance is £1018.35 a year with petplan.
Rourke is just 11 and I have made many claims due to his arthritis, had an expensive time at a referral orthopaedic vet when he was about 7 as well. I paid £760 last year with Pet Plan, so your yearly fee sounds a lot! Not sure what it will be this year.

Our insurance comes out monthly and automatically rolls over each year so I actually had no idea how much we pay! When we first got Ella it was roughly $500 per year and we now pay roughly $750 per year so not too pad considering she's about to turn 8.

We've claimed lots over the years, including her $181 Cytopoint injection that we're currently getting every couple of months. Plus the $5k emergency vet stay back in 2020 when she had a terrible gastro issue that required emergency surgery.

Really, it's one big gamble.
Well after much deliberation, I am not renewing the policy. I did speak to them and they suggested a lower quote for much less cover which seemed pointless. One of the reasons for the hike in price was vets fees are higher so therefore the insurance premium is higher so to me a double whammy if you find you can’t claim for something. Like @Lab_adore we will do an emergency fund for Red. After always having insurance it feels a bit scary to me and it’s risky but…….
