Poppy limping on front left leg

Poor little Pops has been limping quite badly on and off for the past few weeks. OH took her to the vet this morning, and although we thought it might be arthritis in her shoulder, it turns out it is in her toes on her front left paw. Treatment is NSAIDs, warmth, gentle walks, no retrieving (!), etc etc. I'm also a bit surprised - the vet wants to xray her paw to see if it is arthrosis - I am not convinced this is necessary, because there is no real treatment for that either other than what we will already be doing. I've ordered supplements for her. She seems chirpy in herself, but very stiff when she walks, it is obviously quite painful :pensive:.

Finn too has arthritis in his paw. Supplements did help a little for a few month. But not sufficient. He is getting librela injections once a month since January which helps him good. We can tell now when his injection wears out and that he is due for the next. He runs and play like he is a puppy again
Ah thank you that is very helpful Anne. I will ask the vet about Librela, but I think she wants to try a more conservative treatment first with NSAIDs, supplements, etc.

I also just spoke to her about the xray; she does want to do one in two weeks if Poppy is still limping then, but luckily she will not need a general anesthetic as it is just the paw.

Poor Poppy. I know that not all dogs that can tolerate Metacam, but for my last dog it really transformed his life during his last 2 years - he lived to 14 1/2.

She seems very happy in herself since we upped her pexion dose (the anti-seizure drug), and now she is on 100 mg of rimadyl a day (she cannot tolerate Metacam). I took her for a little walk this morning and although she was limping she trotted along happily enough and seemed to really enjoy her walk. OH will take Merlin out for an hour at lunchtime, and she will stay at home, watching daytime tv and doing her nails, I expect... Then another short walk this evening. We will see if this is the new normal for us, or whether she improves over the next few days and weeks.

So sorry to hear of Poppy’s limp. Snowie is also limping. Front right paw. Been like this for a year. I am convinced it is a foreign body (grass seed?) but our vet does not want to cut into his paw webbing, says often the wound is worse than the initial problem. He also said a grass seed would’ve migrated already…

Initially he also thought it was arthritis. He took an X-ray (fortunately Snowie lies still and doesn’t need a sedative for an X-ray) and he was convinced he could see arthritic bone. To my uninformed eye, the bones didn’t look too malformed.

Anyway, he treated him for both arthritis (Rimadyl) and an infection (antibiotics) and said whatever he responds to will give a clue as to what is causing the limp. Well, the Rimadyl did nothing (he said it would act immediately if it was arthritis) but after a week on antibiotics, the limp went away and his foot was less swollen. So, the vet concurred it was not arthritis and was an infection. But he is now convinced it is an inflamed and infected hair follicle (which incidentally the other vet in the practice suggested originally). He said it is fairly common in heavy-chested breeds where they bear a lot of weight on their front paws. He suggested booties (front paws only) when out on walks to protect the webbing skin from dirt and gravel. He also said booties tend to help balance the weight over the paws, which alleviates pain. He also suggested hibiscrub paw baths after every walk for infection control.

Apologies if I’ve already written about this here on our forum. I can’t remember!! I’m also a member of a local Lab group and perhaps I wrote about it there.

Anyway, we haven’t sourced the booties yet. But I do apply a barrier cream in the paw webbing before walks, which helps greatly. When I forget to apply it, Snowie limps more.

Poppy is still limping, it's two months now. I am not convinced it is the paw, although the vet thinks she may have a foreign object or a bone splitter between her toes (see between the first and second toe, at the knuckle). She also has a swelling on the outside of the foot, on the first toe, but no arthritis.

I am taking her back in on Thursday, since she has been on Rimadyl for over six weeks, and while it does help with the pain there has been no improvement in the limp - and no diagnosis either.

Hi Karen,

Sorry to hear that Poppy is struggling.

When Harv first started having trouble on his walks we found out, via x-rays, that he had arthritis in his toes and shoulder (both in his front right leg). If it does transpire that Poppy has arthritis elsewhere we've found that Cartrophen injections really helped (and I've read good things about Librela, but have no first-hand experience). And for a general guide, you could take a look at the blog post that I wrote a while ago (when Harv was diagnosed) - Canine Arthritis Bible.

Thanks for this Richie that is very helpful. Depending on what the vet says, I may request a shoulder xray, as well as blood work to rule out Lyme disease, cancer, etc. I'd be happy to try Cartrophen, but I don't think Poppy is a candidate for Librella due to her tendency to seizures.
