Thank you everyone for your good wishes. Today has been a pretty good day really. Poppy ate some chicken and a bit of canned meat as well as about half a cup of kibble, so not bad at all, and she drank quite well. She was clearly feeling much better this afternoon and even wanted to go for a walk - we made it into the wood just across the road for a mooch around and a good sniff of all the smells. She was happy and smiley in 'her' woods!

I had another chat with the vet today, because I wanted to make sure I had understood what was said yesterday - it seems likely that Poppy has bleeding somewhere in her digestive tract, probably from a growth or an ulcer. Although it was a bit of a shock to hear this yesterday, nonetheless I actually feel calmer today and more accepting of what is coming. At any rate, we've had a lovely day together, and that is a gift.

My husband’s mother would say “as long as the baby has a name”. In other words, as long as you know what you’re dealing with, you can take action and get a handle on it. I find that eases my anxiety. And it sounds like it eased yours.

I’m so pleased Poppy had a good day. I am sure there are many more good days to come; these dogs surprise us with their resilience and good humour. xxx

Poppy is getting weaker, but she doesn't seem to be in any pain, and she still wags her tail when I tell her what a good, good dog she is. She went down the garden this morning with me and did a pee, but she didn't want anything to eat, though she had a small drink of water. Friends and neighbours are being very kind and taking Merlin out for long walks so I can spend time with her. My husband is away on a business trip / visiting his elderly mother and his children and grandchildren. He is cutting his visit short and will be back tomorrow. I've told Poppy it would be great if she could wait to see him, but that if she needs to go before that, that is fine as well.

Yesterday Poppy and I were in the garden together, and I asked her if she would like to play a bit with her dummies. Her eyes sparkled and her tail wagged and she looked so happy, so I put her little dummy in the hedge and she toddled over and looked for it and brought it back to me. We did this a couple of times and she really enjoyed it, but she was tired out by it, but I was glad she had a happy time.
