Preparing to say Goodbye..

This is a difficult post to write, but I think it is important to consider the "how" and "when" question.

Visited our local vet with Casper, to discuss his overall quality of life, and to draw up an end of life plan. It felt difficult, but actually, good to not just accept his condition as "old age" but be as pro-active as possible with vet support to ensure we are do everything not to prolong his life, but what life he has left to be comfortable and content.

We have arranged to say goodbye through Cloud9, who come to your home. They were lovely, caring and really helpful. They also have a Quality of Life assessment i thought useful to share.

Quality of Life Assessment

Dear Casper, how wise you are to draw up and end of life plan.

I went on the assessment website but it said it wasn't available, so I phoned and the lady wasn't very helpful, but said it would be on again at some point. In the last few days, Rourke has gone downhill, he is so very, very lame and has gone from being lame and happy to lame and sad. We are in the middle of a course of Laser treatment. I feel the time has come when I must consider Rourke leaving this world, but I can't bear the thought, I am ill also at the moment, so I suppose everything seems worse. I will try on the website again.

Oh Casper, you are one of the greats, my Irish friend.

Kate, I'm so sad that you have to think about this, but have so much respect in how you are (as always) putting Casper first and thinking about what is best for him. I hope that now you have a plan in place, you still have good time left with Casper. ❤

I'm so sorry to hear this too, I didn't realise Rourke was doing so poorly.

I so admire this approach, Kate. It’s heartbreaking in so many ways to contemplate, but also a tangible and important step in the journey to loving our dogs as well as possible. I am glad to hear that despite it being difficult it felt good to clearly consider the options for Casper. I imagine that, at a time when your hearts are so full, it’s one more great service you can do for him and yourselves to make sure his end is as comfortable and timely as you could want it to be. Thank you so much for sharing this, and echo Emily that hopefully you have many more positive days left with Casper xxxx
