Red is not well

It’s unbelievable how much these costs are. So hard for owners who have to make difficult decisions and for their pets, who may not get proper care because of the cost.

I know that it’s unfair to expect that vets keep their costs low because they are running a business and have to make it viable, but on the other hand the unnecessary procedures and treatments that people end up paying for are so annoying and wrong. People sometimes don’t know enough to refuse or think they have to do it “all”for their beloved pet.

Have to admit that the vet costs are definitely a factor as we think about whether to get another dog or not.

I took Red for an early evening walk and she had a much better poo 💩😊. She slept in her own room last night - I was a bit worried but she was fine. Still not drinking from her bowl but happy to have water in her food which I am still transitioning to her normal diet. She seems more like her normal self - thank goodness

we are both retired now and that amount of money every month is not nothing for us. Nonetheless, like @kateincornwall, we'd make all kinds of trade offs rather than skimp on care for the dogs - they are family, and that's all there is to it!
Yes this is us too. Red is our world and I can’t fault the vet’s actions. All the costs have been broken down so that hopefully I can make a successful claim (which I’ve never done before) but yes it is scary just suddenly having to pay such a large sum of money

Yes it would be for us too - I don’t think we could do it realistically anymore - make that commitment. It’s a very sobering thought

i hope Poppy and Kipper are ok

Kipper’s feeling brighter every day. Poos are still not quite solid, but we’re getting there - possibly last day of chicken and rice today.

On the costs, we’ve just reached our insurance maximum for Kipper so are now paying for everything which is tough. Our vet has agreed to reduce their consultation fees for us which makes a difference, I’m really grateful for that.

Good that Kipper is improving xx

Oh dear -- that is tough. But how amazing that your vets are willing to help ease the burden.

So pleased to read that Red and Kipper are so much better. @HAH what a decent vet you have to reduce consultation fee for you. I must say that Pet Plan who insured all my dogs, including Flicka, paid up for Rourke immediately even though I made so many claims for him.

Red drank out of her water bowl this morning after our walk. First time she has done this since before she was ill - made me so happy to hear her lapping. She’s now back on her normal diet but we have decided to be much firmer when people just give her treats without asking. I’m not saying this is what made her ill - I’m sure it didn’t but it’s been happening increasingly. I wouldn’t dream of just giving a person’s dog a treat - at least without asking.

We met Percy and Ozzy the two black Labradors this morning and they both gave Red a kiss - it was so sweet

I have caught her licking the shaved area on her leg where the cannula was put in. I’m worried she will make it sore. I remember her doing this when she was spayed years ago. Any tips on what might help to stop her doing this? When it happened before I had to get some special cream from the vet and it felt ages getting it all healed. If I can avoid using a cone I will as this makes her shut down

I know you don't want this Alison but I think I'd be inclined to pop the cone on if you have one. It won't be for long, if you can nip the licking in the bud.
Otherwise I think others have used socks etc with some success, or I believe you can get specially made leg covers.

Sorry if this is something you’ve already tried but would an inflatable doughnut be an alternative? Anecdote suggests they’re far more manageable and comfortable for the dog.
