Red is scratching

The brown bits could be scabs. @Anne123 describes above how to see if it’s just scabs (water won’t turn it red) or flea poo (water will dissolve it and it will appear like blood/red). No point treating for fleas if no fleas.

Still waiting for the vets to ring. The brownish bits don‘t turn red in water so I presumably just scabs. Strange she started scratching so much yesterday/today but I suppose scabs can do that. Since I have combed her she hasn’t scratched. She is so sweet - she let me comb her really well, then licked my hand to say thank you. Guess she’s been feeling quite uncomfortable.

Fleas don't live on the dog. Yet one or two can bite, and cause real irritation. I liken it to those with sensitive skin who go through hell when bitten through that awful itching. When we had a very minor flea outbreak, (it probably wasn't minor at all....) but God, it really caused problems for Casper. It took ages to work it out, and in that whole time I never saw a flea. Not even when we bathed all three dogs, and checked the debris under a microscope. It was fleas though, when we treated all dogs, cats and furniture the scratching magically disappeared.

This is also a sign of being bitten by something. Flea bites cause skin irritation and inflammation. You see this in dander, flaky skin cells as this will affect how the fur looks and feels.

I spoke to someone recently whose dog has grass mites, I googled it and the symptoms are scratching and soreness.
Worth a look, horrid looking little buggers.

Worth a look,
I have looked this up - really don’t know. I have just rung the vets again and apparently they are asking the makers of Frontline questions - all a bit vague but she said they will get back to me. Red is still scratching. We have both looked at her neck and can‘t see anything - it’s hard as her fur is so incredibly thick. At the moment all I have to go on is the debris I combed out this morning

Have you tried bathing her in just an oatmeal shampoo? It can help settle in the meantime. Quinn has seasonal allergies, but she also gets little red ant bites that drive her crazy and a bath sort of calms things down. I've used both Nexgard Spectra and Simparica with no ill effects.

No. I did think about it yesterday when she was scratching and she’s still scratching today 🙃. Will get the Nexgard Spectra for her this morning and keep my fingers crossed. I do have some soothing dog shampoo which I’ve never used - she’s never had a bath 🛀 but prepared to give her one if it will help.

Is her collar irritating her?
No. she only wears it to go on her walk anyway. I did wash and scrub her collar and lead yesterday
