Shoot The Dog!

Here is it again, the course that started me on my photography journey! I cannot recommend this enough. Most of you guys will have seen the progression of my photography skills (and there is still SO MUCH to learn!) and this is where it all started. Today is registration day and I cannot recommend this course highly enough. It has been literally life-changing for me.

If you have the means, the gold level is where it's at. Come join in the fun, and let's be photography geeks together!!!

Thanks, Fiona! I've emailed Amy to ask her if my old bridge camera would do the trick for the class. I really miss photography - because it's so hard to get a decent shot of Carbon, I've pretty much stopped taking my camera out.

I'm frankly getting sick of online classes - I've overindulged during the pandemic! - but your photos are very inspirational. Not that I'd expect to attain that, but even a little better than my current ability would be nice. Poor Carbon most of the time looks like a morose black blob unless I get really, really lucky. Who knew Rotties were so much easier to photograph than black Labradors?

Well darn - reply is that my camera would be ok for Bronze level but not for Gold. I have to admit I don't really understand that reasoning - you'd think it would work for the class or not. But that's ok, gotta respect the instructor!

I have a feeling I wouldn't actually get much out of it if I can't do the assignments or post questions...

My camera is a Nikon D850, which is pretty darned good (and expensive 😳) but I started with a D7100. The lenses are the more important thing for quality, mostly... and of course knowing how to use the camera, how to compose photos etc. Like someone once said, “That’s a wonderful pen, I bet you can write fabulous stories with it!” 😂

If I were buying new right now, I’d choose Canon because their mirrorless cameras are way ahead of Nikon’s and even if I didn’t start out with those, when I got to the point of upgrading, it would be easier to stay in brand.
The Canon EOS R6 is quite something!

Ughhhh I didn't sign up last night because I was in bed and wanted to have a proper look on my laptop, but now the gold one has sold out!! UGH I wish I just signed up yesterday.
Do you have any idea what the bronze one is like?
You definitely get a lot more out of gold. If you really want to do it at gold I can put in a good word for you and see if she’ll open up another spot 🙂

Bronze is the same content released on the same schedule and you get access to read the threads of the gold students (which is very valuable) but you don’t get any interaction with the instructor.
There is a FB “study group” which you can join and some of us old timers will answer questions if people post them in there, but there’s no doubt that there is a far higher value in the gold level.

@snowbunny how active is the FB study group? How often do mentors like you pop in to give advice? I'm a bit put off by the idea that there's a small core group off "cool kids" who participate at 100% and the rest who watch from the sidelines and kind of bumble along.

Also...I really really hate FB, one of the reasons I didn't do the three week recall challenge that @Beanwood posted. I signed up and then every time I looked at FB to watch the videos, etc. I get endless posts about abused dogs in Spain. I don't look, but I still have to click through all that mess to get to the content I want.

I guess I'm saying the photo class sounds great and I'm so impressed with what you can do since starting at that point (understanding it's the classes PLUS your hard work and talent) but between the second-class citizen bronze thing and FB being the only point of contact, I'm feeling wobbly about the whole thing...

So this is a dumb question borne of ignorance....but how would a new iPhone/smartphone compare to, say, the camera you use now, Fiona? I mean, I imagine it’s some grade of shit, but is it the biggest shitpile of the worst kind of shit ever shat, or just a small mound of garden-ready composted herbivore shit?

Wondering how much I am missing out on in relying entirely on my iPhone these days.

I would definitely recommend having a go at this. I don't know this particular course but it looks good. And I don't think it's at all essential to have super expensive kit to get good results. Quite a few smart phones, for example, have a proper camera mode where you can work the phone camera just like a full blown DSLR. I take most of my day by day photos on my phone these days after attending a lecture by a professional photographer who does all her work on an iPhone.

You can't beat good advice from a good professional. Last week I spent just 20 minutes with the professional photographer who takes photos of cars for me for customers on our track days. He started by "breaking the mould". We forgot auto functions on my camera and set it for manual mode with auto ISO. I'd never have thought of that. F4 and 1/250 single shot AI Servo partial metering (Canon Camera) and panning. After a bit of practice it all came together and I was taking quite competent photos of cars on track. I'm condidering entering one in the final round of a photography competition where I'm currently tied joint top place with 2 others.

I'd like to do this with a dog - but still looking! :wasntme: Take F's advice and go for it!

This is something the forum can help with. Most of the content of the recall challenge I have in vids with Mr Beanwood that we have completed at one time or another. Slightly different to Caroline, but the concept of engagement, focus and connection is there. I am also working on a syllabus for my own classes which start the end of next month, followed by my teen package - on line, 1-1 and group. @Emily_Babbelhund if you want to come down next week I can practice on you and Carbon! (neighbours are away so we have the whole farm to ourselves... :) )

The new Gundog training academy have a free e-book, so you don't have to interact with facebook... I hear you on that, it can be hard to dodge emotional bullets on facebook!

How about we set up our own four week Mission Impossible forum recall challenge? Not a competition but we can look separately at some elements such as focus, self-control and frustration tolerance and build in some games to help.
