What a day!
At 9am I’m literally standing in the middle of our school forest literally watching blood drip out of his bum. Was so scary. I literally grabbed him and went straight to the vets having texted my head teacher on the way.
Vets have said that basically metacam is very very bad for young pupster (no shit!) and he now has a note on his file to say under no circumstances administer it. The blood is fresh which is good and she doesn’t think he’s bleeding internally - no temperature and no signs of dehydration which is obviously all good. The theory is that he’s caused a tear in his bum from all the straining and the amount he’s going to the toilet.
The bad news is he’s lost 2kg in weight in a week (turns out my is He pudgy comments were thankfully in the positive as he’s not looking super skinny but you can see some rib when he turns which I’m not keen on, on a 6 month old puppy.
He’s obviously also getting worse not better on the ‘lets do nothing’ regime so we are now:
Back on probind with a hefty dose of antibiotics 3x per day to see if this kicks its arse - they don’t think it’s an infection but vet said she wonders if he’s picked something up when the metacam has cocked his stomach up. Vet was also very unhappy that the original vet put him on metacam for a week for a limp - too much too soon apparently.
He’s now on hourly feeds to try and keep some nutrients in him and to try and get his stomach settled. So far so good - he’s had scrambled eggs, Chappie (vet said it’s as good as the rescue stuff for what we are aiming for), poached fish and rice. Vet isn’t a big fan of chicken weirdly for stomach upsets so said try to steer clear of it for now.
He hasn’t been to the toilet since 11am so she kept everything I’ve fed so far in.. poor bugger is so hungry but it’s literally a couple of mouthfuls an hour.
Another appointment on Monday and if he’s not totally improved he’s being hospitalised for tests and investigations.
