Soooo much blood from a dew claw

Yesterday Snowie broke his dew clew. Pretty sure it happened when he did the hooliest of hoolies when I was trying to rinse him off after a shampoo (he’s so itchy right now, poor boy—might be because of molting). I had the watering can in hand asked him to come to me on the “lawn” (not much in a drought!). He eventually sauntered over, I did a rinse and then he took off. Around and around the pool, cleared the three steps up to the patio, flew down again, over the pots, landed on some pots, careening around. I told him he’s going to hurt himself!

Sure enough, after dinner I spotted some blood on the floor. I must confess I was relieved it was his nail and not coming from his penis. He was licking and licking the nail. It was so badly broken that I felt I would have to get the vet to anesthetise it and then cut it off, it was broken so high up. Thank goodness I’ve read here about how much blood comes out of nails otherwise I would’ve been at the emergency vets in a second—he was bleeding to death, it looked that way anyway!!

We let him lick it, self soothing, must’ve been painful. But then my husband noticed even more blood, loads on our beige bedroom carpet! He’d pulled the nail clean off! (And then ate it!) Well that was a relief, no need to get it done at the vet, less traumatic! But the blood was pouring out. I used cotton pad after cotton pad to apply pressure, very bloody! Snowie was very easy about it all, just wanted to lick up all the blood! Eventually I managed to stem the flow enough to apply a dressing and micropore (or, as my husband calls it: micropaw!). Stayed that way all night, Snowie didn’t bother it.

He’s just back from his walk now and dip in the pond. So I took off the soggy dressing. And he’s back to licking it. So I’ll put on some betadine and wrap it up again.

Oooh, ouch, that looks very sore, poor Snowie. I hope it heals soon as his nail grows back - or has he pulled it out root and all?

Molly ripped her dew claw in half a few weeks ago. The vet clipped it as far back as he could and gave us pain meds for her, he explained that she would feel just as we would if we ripped a nail away from the flesh. Luckily hers grew back quite quickly, though it was a job to stop her continuously chewing at it.

Fingers crossed for Snowie, bless him x

Ooh, ouch - but it looks like Snowie’s done a great job.

I read somewhere that cornflour helps stem bleeding- don’t know if others have heard the same?

Yep, styptic powder or cornflour. The styptic powder is better and has a pain-numbing agent in it, too, but cornflour works if you don’t have that lying around :)

Poor Snowie, it can take a while for these to heal. Hopefully it won’t be as bad being the dew claw as if it were one if the others.

Ouch!

Homer has ripped a nail/claw a few times now. The first time was really painful for him. So much so I thought he’d broken a toe and he didn’t want to eat much. The other times I wouldn’t have noticed apart from him licking too much.

When I was growing up it was common place for dogs to have their dew claws removed to prevent all this, especially working dogs, seems like it might have been a good idea !
I think it might still be quite common. But I’m pleased Snowie has his—he uses them every day to hold his bone. It’s so interesting watching him hold his bone, the “opposable thumbs”—the dew claw and the little “thumb”—really work hard! He eats raw meat and bones and picks out the large pieces from his bowl and settles on the grass and holds them in his paws while eating. So he’s probably feeling a bit disabled at the moment!
