Sore tummy

Just back from the vets. They’ve taken bloods and will call me this afternoon with results and what next, which is probably a scan. She actually flinched when the vet touched her tummy which shows how painful it it as she usually freezes and won’t move when they examine her. It’s so horrible seeing her in pain. On top of that, she’s cut one of her paw pads slightly- I’m cleaning it with leucillin several times a day, but leaving it open to heal.

Oh, poor little Harley, I'm glad she showed the vet that she's really struggling. It takes a lot for dogs like her to show their pain. Let's hope there is no delay about scanning her belly if the bloods continue to show nothing amiss x

Vets have just called. Harley has pancreatitis. They have said she needs to be on a low fat diet and suggested Royal Canin Gastro intestinal low fat. I've used Royal Canin before and she really didn't like it. Food is such a minefield. At present Harley is on Nutriment Raw Nutriment Adult | Nutritional Rating 97%

I thought it was quiet a good food, but vets aren't so keen on it??. I'm really bad at understanding food labels. Can anyone help or suggest a low fat food and low fat treats? I prefer to stay as natural as possible - I would rather not use kibble unless we really have to.

At least you have a diagnosis and it’s a condition that can be managed. Poor lass, it’s a terribly painful thing. Does she have any pain relief for it? A friend of mine gets this (if his diet slips) and it’s hospital and morphine...

Would you consider making your own food for her..? Totally understand if that’s a no!!!!! If it’s an option, though, for now I’d go with something like brown rice, veggies and a small amount of chicken breast (all the above cooked, not raw), to give her pancreas a break.

Oh no Naya, poor girl. At least you know now and can help her. Vets vary in their opinions about food and I guess whatever deal they are getting is part of it. Hattie has kidney issues and is on Royal Canin Renal, suggested by our vet, she eats it no problem. I'm sure someone will help, I know how you feel about this. xx

Oh no, poor Harley! Is is acute or chronic pancreatitis?
I think he said its acute pancreatitis.

Absolutely consider making my own food for her if that is the best option. The only thing i worry about is how much to give her?? I know she loves all of the ingredients you have suggested. She usually has veggies every night and I know I need to vary these more than I currently do.

We make up a mix of stuff like brown rice, cooked oats, frozen mixed veggies, tinned beans, sweet potato, pumpkin and beef/pork mince. Maybe a stock cube for flavour. We’d make about 3 kg of this at a time with the meat being about 500g of this total. Instead of mince you could do leaner meat (eg beef shin, chicken breast or something) or else mix in the low fat kibble suggested by the vet. We bag it up into about 200g lots, or about the size of a cricket ball, and freeze. Obi gets one (thawed) for breakfast. He gets other stuff too that’d be equivalent to another cricket ball. Might be a bit of trial and error to work out daily quantity but Harley’s weight will give the best feedback on that.
