Day 13 Guide Dog Training from
Home ( covid-19 style )

Today is a good day, an amazing day - a giant leap forward

Todays mission was:

Walk from home, into the village, through the square and up to and into the co op. Find the service counter, back out. Find somewhere to sit and have a rest, then head back home.

Guide Dog Mobility Instructor would catch me at some point on our top road, call me and we would then go into spy mission control mode 🙂 me woth my airpod and him on bis phone - BUT No communication between us whatsoever, unless I get desperately stuck with something.

Gdmi said It would be radio silence, i wouldnt hear, good job, nice work or anything, unless he really needed to intervene. He assured me He would have eyes on me all the way.
Make my own choices about what I do at off kerbs, decide which route I wanted to take Into the village and back etc.

So, thats exactly what we did. We encountered obstacles, lots and lots of dogs, including anpuppy walker with huide dog pup Iris. Spencer got a little excited , so got him into a sit and then me and the puppy walker chatted for a good 5 or 10 mins whilst both guide dog and pup were sat good as gold.

When I got back home my GDMI pulled up and asked what I thought.

I said, personally, I thought it was a good walk, great in fact. I said, i felt confident, didn't feel at all scared, loved it. I said at one or two of the road crossings, my foouting could have been a little tighter, but overall I was very pleased. We got to a potential off kerb on the way home, but decided to take the opportunity to cross the road st that point.

He said, good, because I thought it was an excellent, smooth walk. So, happy say, you and Spencer can do that route, go to the village, explore the estate, go to the cafes and shops in the village as and whenever you like - just the two of you with Spencer in harness 🙂

He said, I wouldn't have pushed you to this point if I wasnt comfident that you were both ready and could do it. So, excellent, well done - Im very proud of you both 🙂

I, of course shed a few tears (again!) at been told this news.

Im so glad the gdmi pushed us with all of the training and although some Of it was very difficult to grasp initially and exhausting, everything is finally slotting together, and reactions to things thrown at us is becoming so much more intuitive.

Todays walk was freeing, liberating, awesome and i can feel My shoulder rising and my whole body and outlook on life relaxing and easing.

I feel comfortable going out, not scared like I was, I feel
Proud to be out with my boy, safe in the knowledge we have each others back 🙂

Life is grand 🙂
