The Labraventures of Carbón, Spanish (ex-) foster dog extraordinaire

They made it back! Carbon is exhausted and apparently was very good. He didn't want to swim, which was a little surprising. I guess he only likes to swim now when he has a Labrador friend with him. Nadine said that he stayed right with her, no problem.

I felt like a schmuck because I handed over his ball but then forgot about his restricted exercise. I've just not given it a bit of thought since I broke my foot...he's not had a chance to be off lead so it has been a moot point. I was a little worried when they returned because Carbon was panting uncharacteristically so I've let him calm down before giving him his dinner. He's fine now, so I think it was from over excitement from the ball.

Balls are the devil. It's time I just chucked his collection so no one - including myself - is tempted by their amazing power.

Anyway, very happy boy but I'm glad he's back. I don't like him out of my sight very much and especially off lead. I'm too much of a worry wart!

So pleased it all went well. I’m a terrible worrywart, only select people allowed to handle my (mind of his own) dog, lead or not. I remember when I was a student, I thought nothing of volunteering to take someone’s dog for a walk, happy to let it off lead, not a second thought. Maybe dogs were better behaved in those days?! :cwl:

Being in charge of someone else's dog off lead would have me sweating for sure!
Over the years I've taken Fine (Nadine's chihuahua) by myself quite often. Nadine rarely uses a lead with her, but my rule is that we always do except on rare occasions out on the river when Nadine insists that I give her a free run. Fine used to pull horribly on the lead - which to be fair is a minimal problem with a dog that small - but she's a smart girl and learned pretty quickly that with Auntie Emily we wear the lead. As long as you have treats, she comes back very nicely off lead, but I still don't like it. For one thing, I prefer to have her close in case I need to lift her up out of harm's way and for another thing, she loves to roll in poo and dead fish. Ugh!

I find it really hard to trust other people with my dog. Brogan had to stay with a friend here in Regensburg (not Nadine) when I was in the hospital. I asked her that she not let him off lead. He was great with me but for safety I didn't let him off lead around traffic as he had no concept of cars being dangerous. My friend said, "Sure, sure" but then Nadine saw her out with Brogan with no lead. By then I had him back with me and of course he was totally fine, but it still completely freaked me out.

Goodness - hearing that I feel very honoured to have been let loose with Carbón - he was, of course, a perfect Spanish Gentleman.

You hide your feelings well @Emily_Babbelhund!

I’m walking my friend’s dogs at the moment (she’s broken her leg!). We go up on the moors and round the reservoirs. Betsy is fine off lead, even round sheep - but I never let Wilf off, he’s only 12 months old and very excitable. They are miniature Schnauzers.

Are you kidding? With all your puppy walking experience, I was cool as a cucumber when you were out with Carbon. Plus I was really interested in what you'd say about how he behaved with you...from a "pro" viewpoint. :D
