The Labraventures of Carbón, Spanish (ex-) foster dog extraordinaire

I don't know why I miss posts, have only just seen the one you wrote on Wednesday of Donna going into hospital and your almost panic attack if it wasn't for your beloved dog. It is amazing how their behaviour can change when a serious problem arises, how he can change and become so understanding and calm. It must be an understanding hospital to let Carbon come in, so much better to have him than not, I can't quite see this happening here.

Oh oh, Signor Carbon, you are el mejor perro médico, the BEST of all doctor dogs! And you are doing el trabajo mas importante , the most important work. I am certain that Duncan and Brogan and Mama Jodhi were galloping with you on your walk, and I suspect they're also with you in your doctoring duties.
I'm a little slow with his message, but Carbon wanted to tell you that he is very impressed with your español. 👍😁

I agree that Brogan, Duncan and Mama Jodhi are whispering in his ear as he seems to have a leg up on all this medical stuff. Duncan came into the hospital with me to help me learn to walk again, Brogan was with me through multiple surgeries and my cancer treatment and Mama Jodhi was my mother's esteemed doctor dog. That's a lot of experience!

It is really quite amazing that not only do they allow him into the hospital, they couldn't be more welcoming. He has been universally smiled at as we pass by and more than once we've been stopped in the halls to ask if Carbon can be petted - to which he always says 'yes!" of course. The other day there was even a staff person helping a patient walk who saw us and said, "Look! A therapy dog! Can we say hello?" She seemed so thrilled with Carbon and Carbon with her that I didn't correct her to say that he wasn't actually a therapy dog. With apologies to @Charlie 's Hattie and other real therapy dogs out there...

By the way, Carbon is not being allowed as an exception: all service dogs are allowed in the hospital. I do feel a bit odd that we've not completed our training, but as there is no required training in the US and I meet the ADA requirements, he is not skating any laws or regulations. I would have liked to have worked with him on hospital environment preparation and discussed it with our trainer before bringing him in. However as with many occasions with Carbon, I've just thrown him headlong into the drink while hoping he'll float. Not only did he float, he's performing Olympic-level laps around the pool!

Lest you think that Carbon has now acquired his angel wings and is complete perfection, let me assure you that he's still up to his tricks when off doctor duty: including a marked penchant for "recycled nutrition" (that's poo to you and me) and a recall that is depressingly consistent in its inconsistency. However as he is SUCH a medical prodigy, I have to cut him some slack. We'll keep on working on the rest of it and get there eventually. :)

Aww.... Carbon...your dad looks so tired though. How difficult this is for you all xx
He's exhausted. Today I was a bit sneaky and signed up for my afternoon hospital shift and then told him he couldn't come with me. I was trying to get him to do something different - a motorcycle ride or just a nap - while I'm gone but I'll believe it when I see it. At least now I'm two hours into my time with Donna and he's not shown up yet - that's a good sign!
