The Labraventures of Carb贸n, Spanish (ex-) foster dog extraordinaire

Ok, so I've made a vow to talk more about Carbon or just have him talk more. And photos! I did take some photos today at the beach, though not good ones. Then the afternoon kind of fell apart - work is proving a harder adjustment than I thought after nine months semi-retirement - and now my photo editing track pad finger is out of commission.

No, no injury. Super glue. My trackpad hand finger tips are super glued.

Here's the scoop. Day before yesterday I got to the house in Cornwall. First thing to do: set up the bedroom and living room with dog-proof throws and also set up all my computer power cables. The bedroom has a nightstand but no nightstand light. The only lamp is across the room, so I unplug it, carry it across the room, set it on the nightstand and promptly knock it over. While the lamp itself didn't break, the metal rods holding the lampshade together came apart. Drat!

With a mind to fix the problem myself, yesterday I picked up some superglue at Tesco's. Did you know you have to be over 18 or 21 or something to buy superglue? I couldn't figure out why and was genuinely curious, so I asked the clerk. "Because people sniff it," she replied glumly. "Seriously?" "Seriously," she replied, "But you're ok as you don't look like the type of person to sniff glue."

Well, that's a ringing endorsement. :|

So there's that: in the UK superglue is harder to buy than spice - if all the news reports on how easy to buy spice are true - at least at the Tesco's in Padstow.

Then there's today. Determined to fix the lamp, I set up a sterile field of superglue work space, carefully opened the tiny tube - no sniffing! - and dribbled it precisely where it needed to go. I used clear tape to clamp it down and let that sucker dry.

Four hours later, I was happy to see the metal bits holding fast. I flipped the lamp back over, replaced the light bulb, adjusted the shade, plugged it in and VOILA! Except NOT 'voila' because now I couldn't depress the tiny switch to turn the darn thing on. Despite my best efforts, I'm afraid I may have dribbled some glue into the switch. Honestly I can't figure out how, but I can think of no other explanation...unless the lamp gods just have it out for me.

Which would be silly, right? :hmm:

Oh, and while I was doing battle with the switch, it became apparent that the only thing holding the metal shade bits together was the sellotape, NOT the superglue.

For no logical reason, my response to this was to remove the tape with a sharp knife in jabbing motions towards my own hand and then pour even MORE superglue on the offending metal bits, this time coating the finger tips of my left hand in the process.

And VOILA! There is possibly the most convoluted excuse EVER for not editing photos.

It also means that tomorrow I shall be finding a nice hardware/homeware store somewhere within an hour radius (Newquay?) and purchasing a lovely new lamp for the bedroom nightstand.

Carbon, sensing that I am discombobulated this evening, has wisely chosen to remain in the living room on the sofa. If he had opposable thumbs he'd probably go upstairs to the kitchen, grab the superglue, come back down to the bedroom and say...

..."Hey, you seem a little out of sorts - why don't you try sniffing this?"

Oh dear Emily. Can't you knock it off and on using the switch on the plug socket on the wall
No, as it's stuck in 'off' position. :wasntme:

Also even if it was stuck 'on', it would still be technically broken as no one wants to have to pull the plug out of the socket for a lamp. It's not a big deal, I'd rather replace it than try to pass off a half-fixed lamp. Besides, at least I'll be here a month so I'll get to enjoy whatever I buy.

Tomorrow is another day, and it will be better!
Ah, it's fine...rather funny now. I have a long history of superglue working on nothing but my own skin. Should have known better and applied the money from the glue directly to the cost of a new lamp. But then I would have missed the unique cultural experience of being assessed for my glue sniffing propensities by the clerk at Tesco. That really tickled me to no end.

Brilliant :D

Does the Tesco not have a home section which might sell a lamp? I seem to remember one of the Tesco stores around there did. Or home delivery - Amazon would be my first stop 馃榿
The Tesco store here in Padstow is just food, but I'm headed back up to Bristol tomorrow so lots of superstore possibilities along the way, including the IKEA in Exeter.

My son got a nice cream bedside one for 拢5 from there
I'd go for that! :)

Maybe it was just a dream :sleepy:
And I could have sworn the Padstow grocery was Sainsburys and not a Tesco. Weird how your brain rearranges things! There's a big shopping centre outside of Newquay that may have something and I was planning to there anyway today to escape Tesco and take Carbon to Crantock beach. The lamp gives me another excuse to head down there after work. ;)

I have some spare pretty bedside lamps that are looking for a home, not sure what to do with them, maybe I could bring one up and see how they fit in? :) You can have a look when you are up and see what they are like. Seems a shame to spend your own money when I have 2 going begging.

The sad thing - not really sad, but you know what I mean - is that my kamikaze second gluing job did the trick on the shade and it looks perfect. If I just wouldn't have somehow caused the toggle switch to stick in 'off'. Grr.

But lots of options for replacement - the most important thing with this type of accident in a holiday rental is to come clean with the owner and offer a replacement/restitution. Most owners are very understanding about small accidents.

Oh...and to take this back to the topic of Se帽or Carboncito...

Last week as we were prepping for the crossing to the UK, I noticed that I'd missed an important anniversary that is clearly noted in his Spanish passport. 23 February 2018 is when he was rescued from the Chiclana perrera (aka killing station) along with Paul/Vizzy and arrived at the private shelter.

Thank goodness that thanks to the people at the private shelter you were able to run far, far away from the perrera. You never ever have to worry about going back.

So happy belated Liberation Day, Carbon and Vizzy! :partyhat:

Yay, happy Liberation Day, pups!

Interesting it's noted in his passport; which section does that come under? Ginny's doesn't have anything like that.

What a lucky, lucky dog. It just feels like you were meant to find each other.
