Can you not just book a seat near the toilets? :D
I can ask, but what happens with SD seating on long-haul flights is that if there is one seat free on the plane, they try to sit you next to that so that you have extra leg space for the dog. On a full flight, that means that they wait to allocate my seat until just minutes before boarding as they are waiting for everyone to check in to see if they have that free space. If they don't have a free space (which happens very often) then they call up the other people in your row and ask if they have no problem sitting next to a dog. If yes, then they do a call asking for volunteers to sit next to the dog. Luckily there are usually plenty of dog-lovers who want to sit next to a dog. :)

Especially for a long haul, it means that you can slide a small bag with entertainment and other goodies under the free seat. Otherwise it's a very long flight with just the stuff I can stick in my travel vest (Kindle, lip balm and earphones). A free seat next to me also means I can put two feet down on the floor instead of just one at a time.

Between having a free seat next to me and being close to the loo, I'll take the free space any day.

5x? Wow! You can see I never look at first classes prices so didn’t realize they were that much more. Sheesh....
You can get some good deals on short haul sometimes. I've flown first/business a few times on British Airways because it was only EUR20 more than steerage. Ditto with high speed train lines: carpeting for the dog, more leg room, food served and a lounge pass. Really worth the extra little bit.

So it's a good idea, just not really in my ballpark for long haul flights. :)

Some airlines do 'economy plus' which is not much more expensive but gives extra leg room, usually about 4-6 inches. It doesn't sound much but its the difference between having your knees under your chin and having both feet on the floor.

I would 100% volunteer to sit with the dog and hold his leash while you use the washroom!! On the last two flights we were on there were service dogs and one flight the very last row had a seat missing and empty space where the service dog was laying - I had never seen that before. Canadian airline though.

Wanna fly to California with me? :D

That would be perfect! But I'll be thrilled if I'm seated next to an empty seat...fingers crossed.

It is quite a lot more expensive than economy, but nothing like as much as first or business....
I know it's a good idea, but honestly I'm so frugal that I likely won't do it as premium economy on United is still 2x the miles as economy. I've not booked my tickets yet, but it looks like I'll get a RT for $105 (plus miles) which I'm completely thrilled about.

Did I mention that I'm a cheapskate?

Our utterly useless first attempt at shaping a settle today. At least it was something to show our SD trainer during our private session so that she could tell me what to do next.

I'm ignoring Carbon the whole time (as per instructions) but have the camera pointed in his direction. He's used to the camera = treats, so that made it all the more confusing for him.

Carbon's new best buddy Llambie Llama from @Boogie makes a guest appearance at the very end. Otherwise it's a lot of Carbon staring at me and saying, "What the heck do you want here, ML?"

I don't know, buddy, I don't know. At least one of us is smart. :wasntme:

Dear Carbon - he so wants to please you. (Or possibly he wants to find a way to get you to hand over some sausage...) In order to film for your trainer could you set up a camera to one side so that Carbon doesn't see you holding it - I wonder if that might encourage him to relax.

Oh that boy is so edible!!! And the confusion stuffie at the end - Kipper does exactly this. “I just want to do it right, but I don’t know whaaat...”

I like @Joy ’s idea of having the camera a little distance away or in a different set up, as it’s drawing his focus.

For Carbon, these two things are the same.

Main problem is my cludgy big camera with no tripod. I kind of have to hold it unless it's something I can film from table height. @snowbunny sent me her old GoPro but before my surgery I bought the wrong size SD card for it. D'oh! So I can't use it yet. As soon as I can get out and get a new SD card, then I can use the GoPro with the chest harness I also bought for it. That will make a huge difference in filming these types of games.

It's all fine in any case as the purpose was really to film our first attempt and get our trainer to tell me everything I'm doing wrong. I like to do it that way vs. working and working on a game only to find out at the end of the week that I've made a hash of it.

What is a "settle"? What are you trying to shape here? (I know, I sound like I'm channelling Carbon....)
The end goal is to have him lay on his mat and truly relax, so hips shifted to the side, head down, maybe even laying on his side. The written instructions I was following said to only mark and reward when he was truly relaxed, which never really happened in our first attempt.

After our trainer watched the video, she clarified that I could mark any incremental move towards relaxing, such as looking away from me, moving into a down position (like when he play bow stretches as one point). My other mistake was that I was using the same mat that we use for the 'Go Mat" game, so he's expecting a much higher and more frequent reward...not to mention associating the mat with another behaviour entirely. So different mat, NO food rewards and more incremental marking.

"Settle" is really important for an SD because 1/2 of their lives is waiting around. The end goal is that dog will lay by your side completely relaxed in any environment. For us at the moment it's also key because it's a stepping stone to teaching him to go under an airplane seat, lay down and relax. You teach that by combining the Go Mat game with the Settle game.

Carbon has been doing Settle outdoors for quite some time and is pretty good at it, especially when it's just the two of us working together or at the Irish pub with Nadine and Fine. He catches on quicker in a high-distraction environment, so at home is always harder for him - he's kind of a reverso-dog in that way. :D
