The Labraventures of Carbón, Spanish (ex-) foster dog extraordinaire

Señor Carbon had a very good day. First a long walk at 6am, then he wanted to go out for another at noon and finally another at 6pm. He flagged a bit on the last walk, but still wanted to do a big tour around town instead of just wee and back home. He's also back to wanting to mark everything (with rather dubious success but that's another issue). I hope this means that urinating is less painful or not painful at all. There is still a bit of blood but nothing like Sunday or even yesterday morning. The swelling and bruising is greatly improved as well.

I'd be really surprised if Dr. Patzak still thinks he needs another op when she sees him tomorrow morning. I'm not thrilled to leave that hole open but is it worth putting him through another op so soon? Probably not. But we'll see.

We'll have the check tomorrow and then if all goes well his stitches come out Friday. Then I think we really need to have that "come to Jesus" talk with Dr. Patzak about his Leish treatment.

Off to cuddle my puppy now. All this walking is good for me but boy am I tired! 😊

I wanted use a laughing emoticon for your latest post, but that felt disrespectful to the Senor. Glad he’s weeing, and so be it that he hits his foot! Better that than no weeing!

A very short (really, I swear) Carboncito Bandito update. It was back to the vet today who did his bloods and he AGAIN came up low on blood (red blood cells?) and high on infection markers. My vet Dr. Patzak was again quite annoyed with the clinic as she says it is obvious that his tongue and gums are pale and he's seen no change (i.e. no improvement) in his bloods since she did them on Monday. She couldn't understand why the clinic had told me on Monday afternoon that everything was normal.

She said to take him on only minimal walks, get him to rest as much as possible and we'll go back again on Friday for another blood draw and to take his stitches out.

Mood-wise he's quite happy. I did notice that at the biergarten tonight with Nadine and Fine he stuck closer to me than usual so I think the was feeling a bit tired. I've got a lot of work tomorrow so he can have a good rest and we'll see what Friday brings.

Glad you have a vet you trust who appears to be on top of the situation, and that your sweet boy seems more cheerful. A spot of rest and relaxation sounds like it could be good for both of you just now.
Love to you from GGJ and me. xxx

I am happy that in himself Carbon is a lot happier, if a little tired, which is to be expected, it has been really rough on both of you

Try and take it easy, and lots and lots of rest.

It sounds like his white cells are a little high, this is not unusual considering what he has gone through, as well as the operation. Red blood cells don't bounce back, it takes time, especially if there has been an infection lurking somewhere. Keep an eye on this, as it seems a little odd to me, but it depends if there was blood loss during the operation itself? Did the vet do a pre-op blood panel so you can compare baseline to post-op?

Yes, it dropped something like 13% (can't remember the exact number). Kate, he had anaemia when I first got him and it took quite a while to resolve - do you think there is something that could be lingering that makes him susceptible to this?

I think there may have been more bleeding during the op than has been told you.
I agree with you. Don't trust the clinic. Grr.

Do you think a supplement ( on vets advice ) or some iron rich food would help?
I've asked and been told no, at least for now. I've upped his protein and carbs and am feeding 3x a day. Hoping that helps.
