The Labraventures of Carbón, Spanish (ex-) foster dog extraordinaire

Amigos, yesterday was a leeetle bittersweet. We said ‘hola’ to a pair of lovely Eeeenglish friends who we knew from when we used to live here, had a nice visit, but then had to say ‘Adios’ only a couple hours later. This is the part that can be triste, sad, about never staying in one place for long.

Then we had a very deleeecious meal in the sunshine on the terrace at home. 20C in January: ojala que bueno!

Finally we visited the seaside town of Conil for the sunset. Conil has always been a favorite as it has preserved some of its fisherman past and has always had part of its very large beach be cow and dog friendly.

Pues, amigos, I am sorry to say that Conil has gone to the dark side: impressive fish sculptures removed, cows contained in paddocks instead of roaming the fields, and - the worst in mi opinion - all beaches are now NO DOGS.

Sí,si, in wintertime plenty of people break the no dog law and enjoy the beach with their canine friends. But it is sad to see even the most wild and free places ‘tourist ruled’ to death.

And dios mio, what did the poor tuna sculptures do to be put in the bin? It is a real shame to forget why a beautiful leeetle town existed in the first place, to feeesh the majestic fish!

Bueno, I must get off my soapbox because ML reminds me that I too am a tourist and technically part of the problem. To which u say, “Pfft! I am a citizen of the world and a proud native of Andalusia! I am no tourist!”

And now ML must feed me a calming cookie before I start protesting on the beaches and get arrested for being somewhere I should not be. Ojalà!

We went to the city if Cádiz today and had a Very Big Walk. Then we went and watched the sunset in the beach. More photos to come, but a couple to share right now!

So many palm trees help make Cádiz look so exotic.

My idea for a photo pose tonight. ML likes it because she is in it too. Can you see her taking my photo?

Just a note from me (vs Carbón 😉) on his perpetual poker face lately. Poor little dude just looks like he’s bored/hungry/attempting to perfect his Blue Steel with that face! I’m not sure what’s up as it’s warm enough for him to ‘smile’ and he will happily pop a smile for a cookie as we are walking…but not a prayer for photos! 😬

Yesterday was particularly funny as I had him posing in the main square in Cádiz and between poses his tail was frantically wagging as normal, but as soon as I put my phone up to take a photo, I get THAT face. 😕

As I’m snapping away and contemplating the irony of having a genetically happy dog who nevertheless looks like someone is torturing his best friend in nearly every photo, an elderly gentleman actually came up to us and so kindly started expounding on how wonderful it was to see such a happy dog! He was so sweet and of course the Señor went bananas greeting him (and checking his pockets for treats).

I’m thinking, “Fabulous, I’ll get some snaps while he’s still all happy-looking!”. Alas no, as soon as the man said goodbye to us, THAT FACE came right back. The Face of Doom. 🫣🤣

Oh well, better to look miserable but BE happy than vice versa? 😉

Pee Ess: I just love that shadow photo. I’m having fun letting Carbón pick his own poses lately because he’s coming up with some interesting ones. As long as it’s safe (ie not perching on a cliff edge), I’ll snap what he wants. 😊
