Since it's well past dog walking time, I took Trixie on the Flexi and flat tonight to work a little on verbal commands with a leash backup. We did get barked at by Duke on the corner...and I took the chance to let her tell me what she needs. I let the lead loose. Duke is friendly, so I knew if she went to the fence it'd be OK. and the street was empty, so if she went the other way, also OK.
As it turned out, she crossed the street and ran a bit. So that gives me some information. She's nervous of other dogs, even if she's friendly. Which means her barking is fear reactivity. Which means I start with the same regime I used for Shamas.
For those wondering why I might take the risk with a flexi---Trixie has gotten out of the yard twice, through the gate not being securely latched as people come in and out. *cough..delivery drivers* I want her to get used to following verbal cues with minimal leash interference so that if she's out off-leash I can give her those cues instead of chasing her.
I want her to learn to "down" when people pass, because last time she got out, she tried to make friends with someone who was afraid of her. I had to tell them "she IS friendly--just ignore her, she'll lose interest"
