Trixie

Happy1st Birthday Trixie :gift:
Congratulations too on graduating to intermediate obedience x
She is very pretty and Iove her coat colouring. Was the purple collar a birthday present?
The purple collar is new, yes. I got it because she outgrew her pink one...and she's been getting sideways looks now that she's big. People wary of her. I thought a big purple bow would offset her big scary dog effect. It works :)

For her birthday, she got a big box of pig ears:)

Trixie found/caught a dead bird just now. I didn't want to fight her for it, so I let her play with it while I grabbed cookies to swap.

She let me have it, without a fuss....but I'm still left with the question of whether she found it dead, or brought it down. It's freshly dead.....still floppy....but the wings are folded. It's not really THAT relevent, as she didn't bite into it, but rather just threw it around a bit. . Would matter more if she'd ingested some. My neighbours use pesticides, so the concern would have been poisoning

Since it's well past dog walking time, I took Trixie on the Flexi and flat tonight to work a little on verbal commands with a leash backup. We did get barked at by Duke on the corner...and I took the chance to let her tell me what she needs. I let the lead loose. Duke is friendly, so I knew if she went to the fence it'd be OK. and the street was empty, so if she went the other way, also OK.

As it turned out, she crossed the street and ran a bit. So that gives me some information. She's nervous of other dogs, even if she's friendly. Which means her barking is fear reactivity. Which means I start with the same regime I used for Shamas.

For those wondering why I might take the risk with a flexi---Trixie has gotten out of the yard twice, through the gate not being securely latched as people come in and out. *cough..delivery drivers* I want her to get used to following verbal cues with minimal leash interference so that if she's out off-leash I can give her those cues instead of chasing her.

I want her to learn to "down" when people pass, because last time she got out, she tried to make friends with someone who was afraid of her. I had to tell them "she IS friendly--just ignore her, she'll lose interest"

Just got back from ER

Trixie broke into the bathroom and got into the trash....I saw her eat a tampon

After inducing vomit, she produced EIGHT tampons!

The problem is....we counted 11 applicators in the trash can after the fact.

So we're on watch for the next week

Brought home some gi food. Short walks, frequently. Fingers crossed.

Ready to run in to er again at the drop of a hat

I thought the door was shut behind me, but I wasn't in good shape myself having just left work because I was having petitmal seizures.

Oh gosh, just catching up - I hope Trixie is on the mend and maybe passed the remaining tampons xx
Aside from a couple of fuzzy poops, I never saw a sign of the remaining tampons. She's shown no sign of side effects. Perhaps she never ate the last few, or passed them in pieces?

In better news, she's walking on the flat collar consistently and listening well. I've been doing longer walks, going downtown for more exposure to the world. Could never take shamas down there outside of a pack so I leave him home....which means she gets a good 3hours hike.

Plenty of dogs, people, noise, vehicles, construction, a couple of homeless camps on our route. Plus schools and a park with squirrels and birds

Hmm...Trixie's started trying to jump on joggers. Not good. This began this morning. The first one laughed at her, seeing that the jump was playful... so she did it again. The second...an older woman...was afraid. I've talked with Trupanion about behavior modification, and they said if the vet gives me a referral, they might cover after the first $500 for that and her dog reactivity. So I'm going to talk to her vet.

I mean it's something I'd be doing one way or another but if I can get a little back, then I can do it without so much concern about the financial aspect at play. In my experience with Shamas, reactivity is a long haul....

I'm teaching her now to "down" off to the side when we see people coming towards us on the trail. This way she's not inclined to try and join their running game....

@Shamas mom , have you thought of teaching hand touch? It's easy to teach and fun, well Cassie likes it anyway. It's good to have in your tool kit, as they say. You can use it when you see likely distractions coming up.

Might be worth a try :)
I'll try that. She already knows that behavior. One thing I've noticed is that she can't move and behave at the same time. Too much for her. As soon as I add motion, I lose the part of her brain that is keeping her from doing the thing....

Coco used to be a jumper-upper when we got him - he was 16 months old and fully grown. I hate big dogs jumping up on me, and definitely don't want it on other people. We tackled it 2 ways, one was to teach "off" meaning all 4 paws on the floor = big rewards. Once he knew that I had to get the "off" in before he launched himself, big rewards again. The other was to teach a jump up (because OH likes his dogs to jump up at him when he comes home ) so he taught that "patting your own chest" means please jump up on me - massive reward in itself. He cottoned on really quickly.

I remember once though, I thought he was way over the jumping up and we met a solitary walker in the wood. Well didn't he run up to her nd jump all over her, with big muddy feet? I was absolutely mortified. Gushing apologies but the lady was fine with it (well she said she was, but we've all been there..).

Thankfully, up to this point, she's only done things to dog people. The general response to her mishaps are "It's ok, she's still young" or Oh it's fine- I have shepherds at home.

Like the fact she's a shepherd excuses her poor manners? LOL

@edzbird I went through that sequence with Shamas too. I hate being jumped on when I come in. He loves it
