UK ticks - spring’s here!

Thanks for the reminder. There aren't many ticks on our common although his first tick was from Wimbledon Common, and possibly more in Richmond Park with all the deer. Advantix for Homer. I have to time it so that he won't go swimming soon after the application.

There are lots of ticks round here in the long grass. My Cavaliers used to get them a lot. Tatze never has, but she’ll be on Nexgard every month now until the winter. The Guide Dog pups and adults are all on Nexgard year round and they do well on it.

We are in a low risk area according to our vets which I always find surprising since there are many sheep around and the deer population is thriving. Cassie is walked 3 or 4 times a week in the woods where they live, and yet only once as a young dog has she had a tick. 2 in fact, which seemingly both fell off !! Very quickly !
I've never treated her for them and she's never had them again. Reeva on the other hand had several as a puppy, and my daughter treats her for them.
I don't know what it is about Cassie, whether it's the type of coat she has, or whether she just moves through the undergrowth too quickly !!
She'll probably get some now I have made this post !

My Sister's dog never gets ticks and he's white so easily spotted but she still treats him, I personally wouldn't. I truly despise ticks, just the thought of them crawling on my dogs makes me feel sick.

I do find it odd that some dogs don't get them, I wonder why that is? Lucky Cassie @Selina27 especially as you walk in the woods xx

I was talking to my neighbour last summer and I was literally just picking them off both Hattie & Charlie, at least 8 or so each. I leave a grooming brush outside and brush them before we come inside. xx

We don't get them here, either, I've never ever seen one on us or the dogs so we must be lucky. I use nexguard for the flea treatment, only when we see one, not for prevention. I think the cats bought them into the house, and since we lost our roving cat Oscar a few years ago, I think I've only seen a flea twice.

I`m like a magnet for all things bity and stingy x
My daughters the same. I took them to Cornwall on holiday once, within the first 5 minutes on the beach she came running back to me saying "Mummy, I've trodden on a thorn" I said "Don't be so silly, there can't be any thorns in the sand"! I'd never heard of weaver fish until the lady sitting on a nearby rock called out to me "my dear, I think your daughter has trodden on a weaver fish". Turns out she had, poor little girl!

You know how some people rarely get bitten by sandflies/mozzies, whilst others get devoured by them?
A little off topic, but I heard an interesting fact over the weekend. With mozzies, if you slap yourself when one is on your skin, they will associate your smell with the "fear" of being splatted for up to 24 hours, so they won't come back and bite you in that time.

I'm not sure what practical help this is, because there's very rarely just a single mozzie, but it interested me anyway!!

Good heavens, who on earth found that out?

Same here, Labs have never had them. one GSP had one. I don't treat, but did when I went to Cornwall (near Kate!) years ago with the GSPs.
We will probably find now that Rourke and Cassie will be covered in ticks!

I am seriously at a loss, I don't what to do to protect Hattie from ticks. She cannot have spot on so I have been using a natural spray all over her every day before walks for two weeks. No good. The ticks are attaching and we keep removing them, we found two full engorged ones on the floor. I have to do something as this is miserable for her and it's not summer yet . Any ideas would be gratefully received. xxx
