Updates on Mas.

Would any of these cause sleepiness?
I remember when Bear was really ill, about this time last year. He as admitted, on a concoction of meds for his tummy. When he was discharged he was quite dozy for a few days, same when Casper was admitted for a week.

Metoclopramide certainly can cause a little sedation in some dogs, but I would imagine that he is just resting and recovering. So much has happened from an emotional and physical perspective, that I imagine like yourselves he is very tired. Sleep is a great healer! Your vet sounds fantastic and very supportive, probably worth a quick chat. Understandably your perspective of "normal" is way off kilter right now. Would it help to jot down a few notes and then discuss then through with the vet at midday?

When Wispa was ill (at about the same age as Mas) and on a drip for five days it took several days for her to return to normal. I didn't keep a 'poo diary' then, but I remember being obsessed with checking every poo, particularly for blood - which had been the first symptom, together with sickness. She, too, was sleepy but I think that the rest helped her recovery after a rather traumatic time, particularly as we weren't at home and she wasn't familiar with the veterinary practice.

After an initial overnight stay at the vets (kindly arranged by one of the young vets, as they didn't usually do night cover, but I couldn't cope with going into unfamiliar Glasgow) she had to return daily to be put on a drip. It wasn't until the final sign-off day that she barked at the vet, who immediately said, "She's feeling better!".

Keep taking the photos and talk to your vet, as @Beanwood suggests. It's important to put your mind at rest too.

That long list of medicines sounded scary until @Jacqui-S and @Beanwood broke it down. Very grateful for our pharmaceutical experts. :)

Seconding what others have said that tiredness/sleepyness seems very normal. You've all had so much sadness and stress in such a short amount of time. Mas also has to be missing Leo. Maybe not the same way you are, but it adds to the whole 'life has turned upside down' situation.

And if he's sung at the vets all night he's probably quite sleep deprived too!
What's the plan now Leeanne? Is he definitely back to the vets ?

Hope you manage to get some rest, Leanne. Sounds like his gut is working, which is good. You’ve had a lot to process over the last little while. Try to take it easy and rely on your vet’s advice as to how things are going. Your own reactions are understandably a little hyper-sensitive - it probably doesn’t help that your OH is also expecting the worst. Deep breaths and phone the vet when you are worried. Sounds like they are on top of it all. Hang in there.:hug:

Going to vets at 5:30, they don’t appear overly concerned about the diarreah but aren’t happy about the lethargy.

They would have expected him to be a bit more active (he’s literally slept all night and all day apart from a short 20 minute walk) but said that bearing in mind he’s been sedated 3 times in the past 72 hours it will still all be working it’s way out of his system.

Agree with others that Mas has taken a massive hit with illness, medication and investigations, combined with the loss of Leo, but also that wind indicates his bowels are getting movement back. Agree too that a vet check the best idea.
Take care of yourself.

Vet update

He’s now lost over 3kg of weight (is now under 24kg and was 27 at the start of December) and is still terribly lethargic.

Vet has changed his food to a high fat content in the hopes of getting some weight on him - did a temp check (38.6) and rectal exam (which Mas slept through 😔)

They are now considering the possibility of it being a intussusception (think that’s the right spelling) which is where the bowel turns inside out, which explains why the blockage was there but couldn’t be found. That should have flagged up on the ultrasound though but they don’t think gastroentrinitus would still be affecting his energy levels to this extent - plus the weight loss despite them controlling the sickness with meds. They did a stomach palpitation and Mas immediately belched which the vet wasn’t happy with (not a clue why)

Due to the level of stress on him when he’s away from home they feel that the transfer will negatively impact any recovery but have said that they can only hold off for so long - he has to go back to the vets Wednesday for a weight check and if he hasn’t gained then he’s off to Solihull.

So the basics are, the dog is declining, they still have no fucking clue what’s going on other than to tell Me he’s very unwell and that he should be showing more signs of improvement and it’s all fucking shit.

Oh and they have given me yet more medication - bevause obviously if it hasn’t worked in a week maybe it needs another one.

OH wants to refer to Solihull tomorrow, I haven’t a clue what’s for the best anymore.

I would go to the vets at Solihull asap. If he's declining you need to get him there before he looses more strength. I so sorry this is so hard.
