Weather

We have had a lovely run of autumn weather - sunny and highs in the mid twenties. Today is cloudy with some drizzles and humid. Tomorrow is a last burst of summer - sunny and 32 - before a change brings us back more in line with average for this time of year. Mornings and evenings definitely a bit cooler though. Winter doth approach!

The weather is nuts here over the past few days,
Still gusty winds here and the mud is back!! Slipping and sliding on my walk yesterday and a very muddy dog 🐕. Finally the rotten fence that has become such an eyesore at the bottom of our lovely garden has started to fall down. There are now slats of wood fallen down and one post has broken at the base causing a huge lean. It’s not our responsibility but the mad woman that lives behind is someone we are going to have to speak with as it really can‘t stay like that. I know this is going to be an issue as she is not a nice person and it’s going to be a huge expense for her. Yesterday I could see her dogs freely roaming her garden through the gaps!!

Could you not write her a letter
Yes we may just have to do that. We did it last year when a large tree of hers was overhanging our garden - we had to get a company in to cut it where it overhung. The same tree was blocking out the sunlight on an adjacent neighbours so we got the same company to do the work at the same time. Unfortunately she is a difficult person who has caused grieve to adjacent neighbours. She impacts on us too but sadly I doubt she will do anything. F is more positive and says we need to give her a bit of time as she may be arranging something - we’ll see

So how does it work in the UK? You have full ownership of a particular boundary fence?
We have joint ownership so any repair or replacement needs to be agreed by all parties. Of course, sometimes that's easy and sometimes....not so much.

The rule of thumb is that you are responsible for the boundary fence / hedge on the left hand side of your property, unless your title deeds say otherwise, and some do. If there's no one at the back of you then it's yours too, but it tends to always be someone's sole responsibility, I think joint ownership of a fence would be quite rare here? I stand to be corrected.

We have 5 neighbours around us. One fence is ours, the other 4 neighbours are responsible for maintaining their fences. 3 of our neighbours are no problem and like us have replaced or repaired. It’s just this woman who is sadly very difficult in quite a few ways. This is the lady with dogs that snarl at the fence and upset Red.

This afternoon I looked out to see her two dogs pooing and weeing in our back garden - nice 🤬😡. They had come through the gap where the slats have fallen down. F went round to tell her that her dogs were in our garden and he was going to have to put something up against the gap to stop them coming through. She wouldn’t answer the door even though he heard her inside. This is what she does - refuses to answer her door. I won’t bore you with all the things she has done to other neighbours.

I am sure this is going to be a difficult one

Maybe for your own sanity could you fix the fence and then it ends?
The whole fence is rotten (all the wood is like balsa wood) and should have been replaced years ago. It will cost at least 2K to replace properly - it’s a big job. I suspect we’ll end up having to do it. We are about to have landscapers quote us for gardening work which I’ve been looking forward to for a long time - maybe we’ll ask for a quote as I’m loath to pay a lot of money and then all that has to be sorted. Sorry everyone this sounds like I am ranting and this thread is about weather, although the strong winds coming tomorrow may see the whole lot down

I thought the same as Helen, just fix it yourself and then at least it's done. I would definitely photograph the fence, the dogs coming through, the dates etc, and then document the attempts at contact. Potentially you can claim it back in small claims court? Or just eat the cost and consider it an asshole tax.

We have photographed the fence but I regret not photographing the dogs today. I was so shocked to see them pooing on my lawn. They were even staring with like ‘f ... you’ expressions at me! F is documenting everything and we will attempt to engage her in conversation again tomorrow.

just fix it yourself
Two thousands pounds is a lot of money to shelve out when it’s not our responsibility but we will have to have a solution so we may have to ‘bite the bullet’ - hey ho, these things are sent to try us

So it's not an insurance issue if it came down in a storm? Our back boundary fence came down in a storm when Dawn was a baby. Our insurance company liaised with their landlord, and the cost of the new fence was split between the two, no cost to us or the tenant. Clearly it's different in the UK since the fence is only owned by one party...

@Atemas , this is just awful for you and I can empathise although in our situation , it didnt involve dogs coming into our garden . One side of our back garden borders the garden of an old lady who owns a row of large Leylandii trees . She would get her grandson to cut the feathers of the trees at her side of the post and rail fence but never the growth at our side . I did get a lady from the council to come and look , unfortunately , although the trees are hers , we had to pay to cut back all the massive growth at our side, it was not cheap , its insane x
