Weather

We had Waxwings a few weeks ago. Every day there were hordes of people with cameras pointing at them as the scoffed the berries. I only had fleeting glimpses as I drove past, byt there were lots of wonderful photos on facebook, they are beautiful.
I think they tend to come down to the north of the country from Scandinavia more than the midlands. Like you there were wonderful photos on Facebook. I did wonder what people were doing pointing cameras up into the trees, thought it was a camera club outing :giggle:

Good Lord it’s cold. Went for a couple around the block walks yesterday when it was about 5 degrees “warmer”
No walkies today for us. It’s a bit of a problem because Simba does run outside to do his business but he understandably doesn’t linger so he’s not going as much as he does. Yesterday he peed on the carpet in the guest room when we were at work. I’m home for lunch now and asked if he wanted to go outside. He tentatively stuck his nose out and beat a hasty retreat.
Can’t say I blame him. :cold:
It’s getting a bit warmer on Sunday (-24C) and Monday is supposed to be positively balmy at -9. Just gotta endure a few more days.

@Lisa, do you ever have 'power outs' and if so what happens then, though I suppose the fireplace would be a great help. but still difficult to defeat -35!
There can be power-outs but, up until this point, it’s very rare to have brown-outs when it’s this cold. Mainly because it really is a life-or-death situation if the power does go out so our electricity grid is built with a lot of extra capacity and redundancies to cope. However, I’m not sure how it’s all going to go with the increased insistance on electric vehicles. Our power grid is not built to handle that increase on top of everything else.

Mostly power outages happen if there is a really bad storm with lots of heavy snow or freezing rain, that takes down power lines. However in that case it’s usually not as cold as it is now. You might get very fine snow but not the big, heavy flakes that break tree limbs, etc.

Hugo doesn’t seem to care that it’s -34 here with windchill😱 He had a good morning zoomie this morning while I froze watching. I have a few frozen kongs to help keep him busy today though! No Walkies for us either for a few days.

I’ve been worried about my pipes freezing. Every year for three years now they have froze during our cold snaps, last year I was without water for a week. I’ve been much better this time with remembering to let the taps drip constantly, and leaving cupboards open under the sinks so the pipes get more warmth. I have a heater under the one that has pipes closest to the elements. Reading a lot on Facebook of people losing water so it’s working for me so far!

Yes the heater blowing on the pipes works well. We had a furnace go on us over a weekend a few years ago when it was cold like this and that’s what we did.
Brrr…heard today that the temp on Mars is -41c.
