Today we were walking, and we saw the cutest thing. A tiny puppy off-leash. Now I'm not generally a fan of off-leash dogs--it's risky. But this 14-week puppy was stuck like glue to momma's side and listened to every word. It took a moment to realize she wasn't on a leash. Clearly, this woman has put in her work from the moment the baby came home.
Good on her!
We also met a Pyranese, who usually isn't fond of people. As we were getting close, AB was asking if we could ask to pet it..and I was saying to them that given the berth they were given..probably not. Turns out the dog veered straight for us. The owner was surprised. Her dog isn't generally fond of people/ He doesn't appreciate the forward way that most people approach dogs. He must have recognized that we wanted to say hello to him, and respected him, and the space that he needed. We let him dictate the level of attention he'd like from us for a moment, then continued on. He's a big sweet boy.
On our own front, a mother of a toddler came up to ask if Trixie was friendly. I told her that Trixie can be excitable, and to be careful about letting the child too close in case she jumps. . I asked her to sit a moment to evaluate the child. Trixie was cautious when the child was facing her, but as the child turned his back to her, she went in tail wagging and gave a kiss. The encounter was ended there and I gave her treats and praise. Happy experience for all. I tend to be very cautious where strangers are concerned, especially small children. Trixie IS friendly...but she's also inexperienced. I want her to decide for herself if she's OK with an interaction. I don't want her feeling overwhelmed. She also doesn't like a direct approach.
