In ten days time I'm flying out to Calgary, in Canada. From there I will be joining a small group tour that takes us through the Rockies and after two weeks ends in Vancouver. Then I will meet up with my lovely nephew Sam, who now lives in Vancouver. (I haven't seen him since New Year's Eve 2017, so am very excited about this!) I will then spend three days with Sam and his partner before flying home to GGJ, one of these days being my birthday. Today a parcel has arrived from Little Brother (Sam's Dad). How utterly awesome @Candy; travel is such a huge part of our lives too so I'm feeling your excitement and anticipation. And intriguing gifts from your lovely brother in top. Whoo hoo!

Oh Jac, I'm really sorry your lovely trip had to be postponed. I hope you can get to go in the not too far distant future. Meanwhile focus on local trips, that's what we are doing until Steve is well enough to do a big trip. The post surgery impacts aren't allowing this yet

That was exactly how I felt! Also aware that my husband was nine years older than me and that we wanted some time together with neither of us having to work. Best decision I ever made. My career had dominated my life for so long, people still ask 'Don't you miss it?....Not even a little bit?'
My completely honest answer is a great big 'No'!
I enjoyed my work, was passionate about it but when I wake up in the morning now and realise that the day is mine to do what I choose with (well, usually) it just feels like the greatest gift ever!
So yes! Retire at 60, but not because your memory and executive functions aren't good enough to carry on with your profession, more because you deserve some time employing them to do what you want to do in a very well earned retirement. Go for it!😀😀😀

It was very similar for me too, Candy. My husband was nine years older too and when we had both retired we had over nine years with being able to take a couple of holidays our of season and then spending many weeks a year in Scotland to be nearer to our grandchildren. Our careers had been very absorbing and rewarding, but there’s life beyond that! With our separate interests, and joint ones too, we had plenty to keep us busy!

A puppy‘s really something to look forward too, @Jacqui-S. Then, maybe Guide dog puppy walking too?!

I actually think that every time I read your posts about shooting/dog walking/cooking. Who needs excitement when life is full, you can always add that in if you want to!

Semi retirement is good! I took my super ann out of the NHS as soon as I could and had 8 years just as a member of what was grandly called the Temporary Staff Unit -- bank staff in other words. Not many had the skills for community nursing and because of that I was kept busy supporting the teams in mid Wales. It was great -- I could choose when, where and with whom I worked and I loved it. It was luck really, as it wasn't planned but sort of evolved.

When you talk about putting the age up, do you mean the age that you can access the pension from the government?

We have a couple of age restrictions too. One is the age pension (government), and the other is the age that you're allowed to access your superannuation.

Age pension age (to access government pension) is currently 67 and preservation age (to access your own super) is currently 60.
