What made you smile today?

Rorys just asked for a pet.

Me: what do you call the thing snoring on the couch?

Rory: Mammy that’s not a pet.. that’s Stanley!!

I wonder what he thinks Stanley is 🤷🏻‍♀️
That's so cute 😍

I love the way that the kids are with their dogs. Nathan always says there are five people in his family. People that don't know us always think that Ella is his human sister 😆

Rowan got a Lego set for Christmas from a family friend and it features a police dog training setup, complete with agility course, man in bitework suit and decorative poo. And of course two Malinois.

He also got a drum kit and is having a great time and saying he wants lessons(!)

We have the same "poo" in another set. Only in our set it's the icing for a cupcake 🤔😱

Hubby, who is Mr Bah-Humbug, set up a Christmas tree and decorations and even put a wreath in the front door for when I arrived back from SA on Christmas Day. He found a discarded Christmas tree from one of the rowing club parties and then went into the loft to find my boxes of Christmas stuff. We are often away skiing over Christmas so it’s been a very long time since they have been put out.

Norty, norty late night! GGJ and I have had a lovely Christmas with my brother and sister in law, made very welcome, great food, company etc. Then home yesterday and invited over for a meal with friends yesterday evening, also lovely. What's really making me smile though is being here tonight, just Joy and me, with the Christmas tree, the Fireinametalbox, the wuthering wind and the rain lashing against the windows, in true Wild Windy West Yorkshire style, along with a contentedly snoring Labrador. It's so good to be home.:inlove:

7pm, after a busy day getting ready for a friend coming to stay tomorrow, time to sit down with a small(ish!) glass of wine and a bowl of stew. Kong for Joy, which she usually has by the Fireinametalbox in the winter. However, tonight it seems that nextdoor are having a few friends round. Joy is Veryvery nosy and likes to watch who's coming and going, which she can do through the landing window. Suddenly she had disappeared from the fireside and had taken her Kong up to the landing, where she could snaffle it whilst watching the neighbours' visitors. Clever girl! If I had net curtains they'd be twitching!🤣

Dinner and a show, well done Joy! 😁

Glorious photos Emily!! Golly Ella is a fabulous character, I love her making friends and she looks so settled around camp. Kudos to you for making it so comfortable for her and everyone x

Love Ella curled up on the boys beds ❤
Her open crate was right next to their beds but she chose to snuggle with them all night. Bit cute really.

She is absolutely wonderful, but I'm sure it's her nature and not something we've done. She has the perfect mix of being rock solid and unflappable but also assertive enough when she needs to be. The other dog in the photos is our in-laws GR Roxy. She's a lovely girl too and very quiet and placid in comparison to what we've found with Ella and other labs.

We only had an issue with one other dog while we were away and it left a sour taste in my mouth. One couple had a brown and white border collie that was quite obviously reactive as we'd see it run at a few dogs. We happened to be walking Ella and saw them coming the other way. Ella was on lead and their dog was not. It charged straight up to Ella, angry and teeth bared. Thankfully the owner ran up and grabbed him.

The day we were leaving Ella was relaxed, lying down, tied up on my towball as I was packing the car. I turned my back for a second and turned back to see the same border collie (off lead again) race up to her. Ella lept to her feet and stood in a posture I've never seen in her nearly nine years. She stood side on, upright, head quite high and straight out, eyes tight, tail up and out and absolutely motionless. It was as close to breaking out into chaos as I've seen.

Thankfully the owner ran up and broke the collie's focus, grabbed him and raced off. Ella immediately relaxed her posture and did a huge shake, as if she was soaking wet. As soon as I could see it was safe, I let her off and we played a big game of tug to realise any remaning tension, possibly more from me than her!!

It didn't ruin the trip, it's just I could see how serious a moment it was. No one else there seemed to understand but I knew you lot would! 😁

I looove this, and particularly your equal need for a shake off! Increasingly I’ll join Kipper in a shake off and it normally releases a good amount of tension I often didn’t know I was carrying.

So many near misses are missed by the people that could’ve/should’ve been alert to them, eh? I’d consider that a huge success for you and Ella. Clearly the collie was being hugely provocative, and Ella responded as she needed to.

Today J was working all day covering his hospital practice so I asked Rowan what he would like to do. I silently cursed when he said he wanted to go to the aquarium ("not the museum because I want to see animals that are alive") because we went only a couple of months ago and it involves a lot of walking for little legs.

He did so well though. Behaved like a star, loved all the animals (the rescued dugong was his favourite), asked staff some interesting questions and then we stopped off for a sorbet. We did 10k steps and he passed out immediately after dinner.

How did we make such a cute kid?
