What made you smile today?

is the dog walking going well?
Seems to be going really well! Our dogs all get along so well and listen to us majority of the time (more than they listen to their owners!). We are into a good routine now, but do have a little space to add more dogs, which will probably happen after Christmas. Really enjoying it though :inlove:

Do you know why she was so nervous?
Think it's just a lack of socialising to be honest... sshe's not so bad with other dogs but is nervous of people, especially men. She's also pretty territorial in her own garden. She's come on so much in even just the couple of weeks we've been walking her. Was such a joy to see her so happy on her walk today!

This came up in my FB memories today and made me smile , puppy Reuben with his long legs xx

Oooh, I remember him then - Carbón and I met him the day after he came home, I think? I was expecting this tiny puppy but Reuben was already huge! 😂

And of course Carbón was sheer embarrassment hating Reuben on sight and trying to eat him. Then Nelly telling him off.

Still convinced that when Carbón came back the following year and fell in love with grown Reuben that Carbón earnestly believed that his new friend had murdered and replaced that ‘irritating’ puppy from the year prior. 😉

The Señor got his labs back today and his kidney function looks great as does his thyroid. The vet forgot to do his leishmaniasis test, so they’ll add that in too with results at the end of the week. He was negative last time so I don’t anticipate any issue, just me being a bit obsessed with monitoring everything.

I’m thrilled about the results, especially as Carbón ‘s kidney and purine-friendly homemade diet is somewhat of a guessing game.

Strangely I’m also a little sad that he didn’t show up with anaemia or thyroid issues. Why? Because he’s really slowed down lately and I wanted a ‘quick fix’ reason that had nothing to do with age. As @kateincornwall can tell you, I’m in full throttle denial about Carbon’s actual age. One reason you never see ‘Happy birthday Carbón’ here on the forum - he doesn’t have a birthday so he’ll be here forever!

But the big picture is great, as a year ago the vet said his kidney values were quite bad. It’s amazing what the food change has done. ☺

Great news @Emily_Babbelhund, how old about is Carbon :dug:
Ooo, the hard question! Well, up until this spring, I said he was 4. Kate rolled her eyes so hard at me, that in concession I started telling people he was 6.

With the emergence of his white goatee (and with more eye-rolling from his German vet who now says he needs a ‘senior’ blood panel), I practiced calling him “8” since September. I prefer even numbers, if you couldn’t already tell. 😉

We will be sticking with eight years old for a few years now. I did that with Brogan until he turned 12. The main reason is that any older than 8, and when you answer the how old question from strangers, older than 8 gets “Awwwww….” which is half affection and half pity. I can’t stand the “Awwwww….” constantly (we meet a LOT of strangers) so I prefer a harmless fiction. 8 is the last age that doesn’t get you that bad sound out of well-meaning dog lovers.

That was a typical really long answer! 😂

TLDR version:
Officially (on his passport) he is nearly 12. Optimistic guess on his actual age: somewhere between 8-10.

That is good news about Carbon's results, great that a food change can make the difference. Maybe Carbon is just tired from travelling and will regain his energy after a rest x
He was also on a slew of meds during our Italy trip last winter to correct the anemia and support his kidney function. We tested bloods a few times as I was experimenting with his diet - first I had not enough fat, then too much. He’s been only on the diet and his leishmania meds (allopurinol) for 11 months now though, and apparently going gangbusters.

His energy is ok and he’s very happy. I just need to adjust our walking schedule, something I did with Brogan too. Getting my head around that and remembering not to push Carbón is on me. Part of the challenge is that I’m more fit than I’ve been in six years and can walk for hours, while Carbón needs a rest after a bit. It’s been the other way around for a long time!
