I love all of your stories
I have always been a dog person...grew up around them. Always wanted one of my own, but not a Lab. Nope, not a Lab. Almost anything but a Lab lol
My experience with Labs were Jodie-my Nan's Lab, who was really not very smart(chased lasers and was basically untrainable) dragged me down the street on my belly when I was 9. .....random barking Labs tied outside of stores, crying for their people, suffering seperation anxiety. ...Lahody- hyper young black Lab, who I "walked" a few times a week when I was a teen...but let's be honest, I only ever walked her for the first couple of blocks, then spent 45 minutes trying to catch her after she slipped he collar(every. single.time)
Yup, as far as I was concerned, Labs are hyper, jumpy, not smart, and prone to seperation anxiety and barking. I guess I only met labs who weren't trained yet lol. Shamas doesn't really fit the steriotype
So I wanted a Shephard, or a Retreiver. Something smart, good with kids and trainable.
When Hubby went on Nights, he told me we'd get a dog and of course I jumped at the chance! I knew we'd not pass muster with an official adoption agency, on account of having a small house and 4foot fence...and wanting a large dog....so I called the pounds. I explained that we already have 3 cats and 3 kids(two of them teens) and that we'd like a dog for "security" but really it's to be company on my walks. I have plenty of time, and come from a family of dog owners.
As they went through their potentials, they described "Hanson", a 5year old Lab who was laid back, loved walks, good on the leash(LOL!!!!)fine with the cats(until we got him home and he saw one move lol)
We knew we had to have him. So we drove over the next day and filled out the paperwork. they loved the answers to the questionnaire! How many hours a day will he be left alone? less than 3 How many hours a day will he be walked? 3-4 Do you have experience with dogs? etc. He might be MY first dog, but I have the time and dedication, so I was allowed to walk out with him and I love him problems and all
And we were lucky, because apparently they'd posted him on facebook that very morning and as we finished filing the paperwork, someone walked in to enquire about him! good thing we didn't take the time to think about it!
I'm glad I got a Labrador.....can you guess what our next dog will be? LOL!
Shamas is helping my youngest to get over her fear of dogs....she had some bad experiences, but thanks to him she's getting braver as she walks down the street. She's learning that she doesn't have to fear anymore. At the same time, he's learning that he doesn't have to protect her from every dog we see. They're both doing very well
